Job Description

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high quality, cost effective care to patients within the APPs scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. The APP reflects the mission, vision, and values of the organization, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Description This is a 40-hour position for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the Hematology/oncology Department, focused on upper-aerodigestive cancers (head/neck cancer and lung cancer).  The successful applicant will see patients as an independent provider as well as in conjunction with the physician faculty in a parallel clinic. This APP will work as a key integrated component of a multidisciplinary team including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, ENT surgeons, nurse navigators, Speech and Swallow and nutrition to provide optimal care to patients.The nature of the role is expected to evolve over time as the NP or PA acquires progressive knowledge and independence in the disease state and the functioning of the group. As a core mission of our care, the APP will participate in standard clinical care of patients participating in clinical trials. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·Evaluation and management of upper areodigestive patients during treatment.

·Supportive care of patients during treatment.

·Evaluation of disease state, laboratory results, imaging results and pathology results.

·Generate plans of care for both return and new patients with guidance and backup from MD practitioners.

·Communicate, discuss plans of care, and make appropriate referrals as needed with allied specialties.

·Education patients and families regarding their disease states, goals of care, and treatment decision-making.

·Maintain robust electronic medical records, fully updated each visit while maintaining cumulative records of treatments and their outcomes.

·Participate in continuing education as requited by licensing authorities.

·Participate in continuing education opportunities to continuously expand and improve practice.

·Participate in clinical trials by accruing patients and managing patients on trial.  If interested, the position could evolve to include additional research opportunities and responsibilities.

·Participate in occasional cross-cover in clinic of patients with other tumor types with appropriate guidance and backup from MD practitioners.

·Prescribe medication as permitted by the N.C. Board Medical Examinors and/or NC Board of Nursing of Nursing. Prescribes any necessary drugs under the direction of the supervision physician an in accordance to the UNC PA and NP protocols. Must have or be eligible for a DEA license.

·Perform other duties within the scope of practice for Advanced Practitioner Provider Team as needed 

Qualifications Previous oncology experience preferred. The Division of Hematology-Oncology has a formal on-boarding orientation process and continued practice assessment for all APPs to learn and improve skills that are necessary for each specific disease segment, and a comprehensive handbook as a tool for additional guidance.


Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program. Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider  in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department.
