Job Description


The essential duties and responsibilities of an Oncology RN for the Rex Garner Hematology Oncology department includes:

-Supporting patient safety initiatives by maintaining an environment of safety for patients, self and others
-Abiding by the safe handling guidelines as recommended by the Rex Policies, OSHA and ONS
-Participating in clinical trials ensuring that regulatory compliance and patient safety is maintained
-Assessing the patient's current performance status, VS, current lab values, body surface area, required diagnostic tests/results and the physician's written orders prior to administrating hazardous drugs
-Assessing the patient's readiness to receive chemotherapy drugs relative to the set parameters, physician orders, diagnostic tests, pharmaceutical regimens and the patient's pertinent medication history
-Ensuring that the oncology patient has obtained all of their prescription medication prior to chemotherapy administration, and obtaining the physician's orders for all necessary diagnostic tests prior to IV infusion or oral chemotherapy
-Administering hazardous drugs/chemotherapy, assessing/monitoring the patient throughout infusion with strict adherence to Rex Policies and Procedures and ONS guidelines, and using personal protective equipment during administration
-Maintaining proficiency in loading, unloading, connecting, disconnecting and troubleshooting problems with the continuous medication administration pumps such as CADD and CURLIN
-Initiating a patient education plan according to the learning level/needs/readiness of the oncology patient and prescribed treatment regimens/chemotherapeutic agents 
-Advising an appropriate plan of care and documenting rationale for the medical advice given
-Documenting the patient's medical history, medication history, hospitalizations, fall risks and medication reactions/concerns from previous hazardous drug treatments, and addressing these with the physician, advanced practice practitioner or patient as appropriate
-Documenting current treatment pharmaceutical protocols and physical assessments into the medical record
-Maintaining high level assessment skills needed to review and recognize the patient's biophysical, sociological, psychosocial, age specific and safety needs
-Continuously learning about oncology topics in order to stay current with new practices and medications
-Utilizing comprehensive high level expertise in understanding pharmacology which includes dose and disease specific cancer knowledge, standards of practice for protocols, and research based on diagnosis and prognostic indicators
-Utilizing high level critical thinking skills to recognize potential reactions and adverse events related to the administration of hazardous drugs and chemotherapy 
-Utilizing critical thinking skills in telephone triage in a high risk population for oncologic emergencies
-Double checking systems to ensure accuracy in a variety of clinical areas including medication administration, compliance, infection control with high risk/immunocompromised patients and patient safety
-Participating in performance and quality improvement activities
-Recognizing, supporting and utilizing evidence based nursing practices and adhering to the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics

Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Candidate is required to have a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification, have an Oncology Nurse Certification (ONC) or be eligible to have one within two (2) years of hire date, have a hospital-based chemotherapy certification or be eligible to have one within six (6) months of hire date and be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina (RN NC LIC).

It is preferred that the candidate have a Bachelor's degree (BSN) from an accredited school of Nursing and have previous oncology experience.
