Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, assists in filling physician orders including IV order, floor stock, control drugs, and related activities. A level II technician assumes a more responsible role in the department by acquiring skills in advanced areas.
Essential Job Functions:
The following is a summary of the essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time. A level II technician demonstrates proficient performances of Level I activities as evidenced by annual performance evaluation. Assists the pharmacist in preparation of IV admixtures. Accurately interprets physician IV orders, computer entry, record maintenance, and label generation with no more than 1-2 errors per week.
Determines patient needs for IV admixtures for the next 24 hours during morning rounds and bills and credits accurately with no more than 1-2 errors per week. Calculates IV doses, flow rates, and volume of IV Products for review by pharmacist with no more than 1-2 errors per week. Maintains the cleanliness of the IV room and equipment. Manage inventory in the IV room and notes changes in product turnover to maintain low but adequate inventory. Prepares daily IV solution, drugs and supply orders and assists with daily restocking.
Education and formal training:
High school diploma preferably with courses in math (algebra) and chemistry. Must register with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.
One-year hospital pharmacy technician experience with IV admixture experience or with capability and willingness to train in IV admixtures within six months.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
Must undergo additional training at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in IV admixture services including but not limited to the following: At least 1 month of training in the IV room under direct supervision of a pharmacist and a Level II technician. Demonstrates the needed math skills by inspection during the training period. Demonstrates competency in sterile technique, quality assessment and improvement, and workflow management by observation during the training period. Demonstrate the ability to identify and address the needs of different patient age groups and the ability to effectively communicate with the patient.
Stands and walks majority of shift. Good eye/hand coordination. Lifting up to 30 lbs. and stretching. Frequent stressful situations.
