The essential duties and responsibilities of a Coder - Outpatient (Phys Pract) include:
-Maintaining an environment of safety for patients, self and others
-Analyzing outpatient records to determine and assign ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding according to national coding conventions, regulatory agencies and reimbursement practices
-Analyzing records for complete clinical documentation necessary to determine appropriate diagnoses and communicating with physicians when necessary to obtain additional clarification
-Responding to questions and edits generated by the pre-billing auditing systems
-Prioritizing records according to established procedures to expedite the reimbursement process
-Abstracting and entering data of coding information and other statistics from medical records
-Reviewing medical records for appropriate outpatient diagnostic orders and abstracting information for use by Patient Accounting department to ensure appropriateness of billing
Other duties may be assigned.
Candidate must have a Bachelor's degree, or have completed a Registered Health Information Technician program, AHIMA or another independent study coding program or have an equivalent combination of education, certifications and experience. Candidate must also have at least one (1) year of hospital outpatient coding experience and be a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
