Job Description

Reviews physician preference lists; checks supplies and instruments required for each surgical procedure. Prepares and maintains patient's medical record and assists with Birth Center registration as needed.

Implements appropriate instrument table set up; placing equipment and supplies per protocol and according to instruction. Prepares and maintains a sterile field throughout procedures.

Provides assistance to obstetrician during deliveries as needed; hands instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other tasks as directed by obstetrician; puts unused supplies and instruments away at the end of the procedure.

Provides assistance during procedures; reflecting awareness of anatomy, necessary principles, skills, supplies and an adequate knowledge base.

Assists team members in implementing the perioperative plan of care to include: positioning patient (with consideration for skin protection and patient safety), confirmation/preparation of operative site, updating physician preference card, care of operative specimens and room turn over. Understands and complies with OR policies, procedures and protocols.

Answers telephone and intercom calls and provides information or relays messages to health care team members and patients/families. Communicates pertinent patient information to appropriate person(s).

Communicates location with charge RN or designee. Directs visitors to patients' rooms or other destination.

Performs patient care tasks associated with admission to PACU or pre-op for cesarean section under the supervision of an RN (VS, pericare, intake/output as directed); assists with pericare, prep for discharge & provides transport for patients to designated areas within the facility. Remains proficient in computer entry of physician orders, STAR transfer and other pertinent information for pre-op or PACU phase.

Assists with inventory and stocking of supplies and instruments. Reports additional needs to materials coordinator or manager. Reports/follows appropriate procedure for broken items (equipment, instruments, etc.).

Submits patient charges as directed.

Supports all Core Measures {examples include: exclusive breast milk feeding, prevention of surgical site infections, Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI), etc.}.

Demonstrates awareness and respect, for patients, families, and significant others, as individuals and as family units regardless of their socioeconomic status, culture, religion or personal beliefs.

Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rates, and food and fluid intake/output as directed. Performs ADL's for/with patients as directed by RN. Demonstrates adherence to body mechanics guidelines and utilizes safe patient handling equipment when providing transport for patients to designated areas within the facility.


Licensure & Experience:

Surgical Tech or NA, BCLS, prefer hospital or surgical experience.
