Job Description

Position: Nursing Assistant
Location: UNC Rex Healthcare
Hours: 7p-7a

The essential duties and responsibilities of a Nursing Assistant for the West/Orthopaedics department includes:

-Maintaining an environment of safety for patients, self and others
-Following the hand hygiene policies and using personal protective equipment
-Following positive patient identification procedures with specimen collection, BGM scanning, and procedures or treatments such as an enema
-Ensuring that the patient's personal hygiene needs are met, including mouth and foley care
-Promoting proper skin integrity by keeping the linens clean, dry and wrinkle free, limiting patient's to one layer of linen, utilizing the slide sheets, keeping the HOB less than 30 degrees to reduce friction and shears, supporting the reduction of diaper use and using skin care products appropriately
-Keeping the patient's room neat and orderly by removing food trays after meals, emptying the bedside commodes, hats and urinals, removing any soiled linens from their rooms and ensuring to not store any excess linen in the rooms
-Emptying all foley catheters/drains, recording the patient's intake and output, passing ice, emptying trash and the linen hampers, ensuring that the clean and dirty utility rooms are tidy and keeping the hallways clear by returning equipment to the storage area or on one side of hallway at the end of every shift
-Providing care to minimize potential complications such as use of SCDs, IS q2hours and adherence to the infection prevention guidelines
-Demonstrating adherence to the body mechanics guidelines and utilizing safe lifting equipment
-Following the falls risk monitoring protocol q2hours for patients at risk for falling
-Responding promptly to all alarms including bathroom alarms, bed/chair exit alarms and emergency alarms
-Removing defective equipment from use, and entering or reporting work orders
-Assisting with ordering meals and setup/feeding, distributing nourishments, following up with the patient in regards to consumption and completing the appropriate documentation
-Taking actual weights upon admission and per protocols, taking vital signs and other measurements such as I & O and BGM with timeliness and at correct intervals without prompts, and verifying any abnormal dynamap readings with the manual equipment
-Entering patient data as care is provided in a timely manner, and ensuring that all care provided is documented completely and accurately
-Collaborating with team members and patient care nurses to complete care, and demonstrating a willingness to assist patients outside of the patient assignment
-Rounding every hour to anticipate requests and meet the customer needs before they ask, facilitating patient activity and ambulation, and taking the initiative to turn non ambulatory patients every 2 hours
-Accurately relaying information regarding the patient's needs to the RN or Unit Secretary in a timely manner
-Following up with the nurse throughout the shift regarding the status of all tasks delegated and reporting to the RN prior to the end of shift 
-Reporting to the nurse or other nursing assistants, signing on the board at the nurse's station when leaving the unit for breaks and planning for coverage
-Completing errands with attention to priorities and promptly returning to the unit 
-Demonstrating judgment to manage multiple calls at the same time and prioritizing the workload according to the needs of the patient such as testing, discharges or surgery
-Assisting the transport team with transfers and preparing rooms for admissions
-Assisting with precepting new nursing assistant staff which includes covering the required competencies and training, offering support and feedback to the new co-workers, and participating in orientation progress meetings
-Actively participating in unit based councils or performance improvement projects
-Being an active participant in staff meetings and huddles, attending the required medical surgical service line meetings and ensuring that the education notebook is read/signed monthly

Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Candidate is required to have a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification, have completed an accredited Nursing Assistant Training Program, be listed with the Nurse Aide Registry with the Department of Facility Services and have a Nursing Aide I Certificate (NA I).


It is preferred that the candidate have a High School Diploma or GED and have previous nursing assistant in the clinical specialty desired.
