Job Description

Location: UNC Rex Health Care
Department: PACU East
Schedule: Casual/ Per Diem, 12 hours per pay period.

The essential duties and responsibilities of a RN/PACU include:

1. Safety
-Maintaining an environment of safety for patients, self and others
-Maintaining a neat and organized work environment to promote efficiency, effectiveness and safety
-Adhering to the Rex Infection Prevention policies which include proper hand hygiene, appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment, nails, jewelry, and food and drinks in the patient care areas
-Demonstrating proper body mechanics and performing safe patient handling
-Ensuring proper SBAR/handoff communication when receiving patients and when relinquishing care, including the use of ticket to ride
-Performing positive patient identification by using two patient identifiers and specific electronic devices at the bedside
-Following all HIPAA policies in regards to patient confidentiality and sharing protected health information

2. Patient Care
-Serving as an advocate to meet the patient’s needs by effectively collaborating with the entire healthcare team
-Utilizing critical thinking skills such as problem solving, time management, priority setting, planning and clinical reasoning to safely provide direct patient care in a professional, caring, culturally sensitive and cost-efficient manner
-Maintaining communication with the patient and family support system throughout the peri-operative experience
-Assessing the patient’s condition including their biophysical, psychosocial, age specific, cultural and safety needs
-Ensuring that these assessments are documented thoroughly, and according to the professional standards of care and the unit policies
-Recognizing subtle changes in the patient's condition, informing the appropriate physicians and utilizing the available resources
-Communicating significant changes in the patient's status and their responses to treatment in a timely manner
-Effectively using the nursing process to develop, implement and evaluate the patient’s plan of care, and updating the plan of care when there are changes in the patient's condition
-Initiating a patient education plan according to the patient’s individualized needs, including patient and family instructions
-Demonstrating responsibility and accountability for the completion of assignments, documentations and verification of the care provided

3. Professional Development, Teamwork and Engagement
-Serving as a Charge Nurse by demonstrating the ability to assign/delegate patient care appropriately, serving as a resource to other members of the team, handling other administrative duties such as staffing decisions and maintaining patient throughput, leading by example, addressing issues in a timely manner, demonstrating accountability and performing service recovery as needed
-Providing support and information to the Charge Nurse/Manager to ensure adequate staffing and safe patient care
-Promoting a nurturing environment and participating in the professional development of self and others
-Maintaining a positive and constructive attitude and willingly and independently seeking out opportunities to assist other co-workers
-Participating in the precepting/mentoring and professional development of orientees, interns, students and volunteers, setting goals and documenting their progress while maintaining communication with the managers, educators and Team Leaders
-Attending and actively participating in unit staff meetings/huddles
-Attending and participating in educational offerings throughout the year for practice/professional development such as the Nursing Grand Rounds, in-services, conferences and CE Direct
-Successfully completing annual competencies prior to their deadlines
-Completing all assigned audits throughout the year, including documentation and hand hygiene
-Identifying opportunities for quality improvement within the unit and sharing feedback constructively
-Understanding and following the standards and scopes of the nursing practices and adhering to the professional standards described in the ANA Code of Ethics

Other duties may be assigned.



Candidate is required to have an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification, a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification, a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification, be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina (RN NC LIC) and have at least two (2) years of professional nursing experience.


It is preferred that the candidate have a Bachelor's degree (BSN) in nursing and experience in a perioperative or PACU setting.
