Job Summary: 

The Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) provides vision, nursing governance structure, and strategic nursing management. The CNO is responsible for planning, organizing and the operations of the division of inpatient nursing. This position has responsibility, authority and accountability for nursing practice, nursing education and nursing quality activities. Provides consultation services to other departments within the health system. The CNO represents nursing at the Governing Body meetings. This position reports to the President and Chief Executive Officer. 

Description of Job Responsibilities: 

  • Creates a positive, collaborative work environment. 
  • Develops and implements objectives, policies and procedures. 
  • Provides oversight to personnel functions, including recruiting, hiring and retention of staff, and handling disciplinary actions. 
  • Ensures that operations comply with established standards and regulations. 
  • Provides financial oversight in budgetary formation and compliance. 
  • Provides guidance to staff and acts as resource to colleagues. 
  • Ensures that nursing care is delivered within the framework of evidence-based practice, with safety, quality, and cost considerations. 
  • Provides periodic reports to the Board of Directors of work being accomplished by nursing. 

Qualifications

Education Requirements: 

Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from a state-accredited school of professional nursing and a Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) or other related master’s degree. 

Licensure/Certification Requirements: 

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. 

Professional Experience Requirements: 

Ten (10) years of nursing experience in an acute care hospital or hospital system with at least five (5) years of progressive leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements: 

Understands and applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.
