Summary:

In this in-house counsel role, the attorney will be responsible for providing legal advice and services in support of the operations of UNC Health Care System and its affiliated hospitals and entities, assisting with day-to-day regulatory and operational issues, as needed. This attorney will be assigned as the primary legal contact for one or more of the hospitals in the UNC Health system. Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing legal advice and counsel to administration and clinical staff regarding medical-legal matters, potentially including, but not limited to, informed consent, privacy, confidentiality, credentialing, medical staff issues (including peer review), telehealth/virtual care, regulatory requirements, accreditation, and standard of care issues;
  •  Analyzing the impact and application of federal and state health care laws and regulations, including Stark, Stark Group Practices regulations, Anti-kickback, HIPAA, EMTALA, the Civil Monetary Penalties Law, other fraud and abuse laws, and Medicare Conditions of Participation in connection with and in relation to the clinical, strategic, and business operations of UNC Health and its affiliates;
  • Advising, negotiating, drafting, and reviewing contracts and other legal documents related to health care operations;
  • Assisting operational partners with a variety of legal issues that arise in the context of reported events and claims; and
  • Assisting with employment related issues in a health care setting.

Other Information

Applicants must possess a degree from an accredited law school, strong academic credentials, and be licensed to practice law in North Carolina within one year of employment. The successful applicant must have a minimum of five years of relevant experience in an attorney role practicing in a hospital setting, health care environment, or a law firm, where the applicant’s practice included substantial work with health care clients and/or work on health law related issues. Experience working with academic medical centers, non-profit and/or public entities is helpful but not required. The work location for this position is Chapel Hill, NC. The successful applicant may be expected to spend some work time on site.

Education Requirements:
● Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Licensed to practice law in the state of North Carolina or be able to obtain a valid NC license to practice law within a year of hire
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Five (5) years of relevant experience in a hospital, health care environment or law firm
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Excellent oral and written communication skills.
