Summary:
QUALITY AND COMPOUNDING COMPLIANCE TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR (QCCTS) 

The UNC Health Department of Pharmacy is seeking a highly-motivated individual who will work with the Clinical Manager, Compounding and Perioperative Services to optimize our efforts for continuous quality improvement in medication compounding, develop and coordinate staff education and training, ensure competencies are up to date, perform audits, reconcile and document regulatory requirements according to industry standard, and coordinate vendor relations. Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Quality and Compounding Compliance Technician Supervisor (QCCTS) will largely focus on medication compounding quality and compliance, medication management compliance, and staff education.

The individual must demonstrate accountability, initiative, and responsibility as it relates to the care areas and the clinical and operational staff served. The individual must have a working knowledge of industry standards including but not limited to the UNC Health policy and procedure manual, the U.S. Pharmacopeia Convention (USP), The Joint Commission accreditation standards (TJC), and state and federal regulations. The QCCTS will provide guidance and assistance to leadership as well as frontline staff on the aforementioned standards. This individual will be an integral part of daily workflow and will serve on the UNC Health Accreditation Readiness Committee, a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to continuous quality improvement and survey-readiness. 

Responsibilities:
Quality and Compounding Compliance: 

  1. Participate in routine audits of pharmacy compounding areas (sterile and non-sterile), facility review, pharmacist and technician observation, and employee interviews 
  2. Provide group and individual hands-on training on techniques and departmental policies and procedures 
  3. Develop and lead compounding orientation and training of new staff, including UNC Health Department of Pharmacy competency checklists and media fill/glove fingertip testing 
  4. Ensure compounding staff are scheduled for initial, biannual and annual competency assessments in a timely manner
  5. Responsible for the incubation, assessment, and read of media samples and fingertip samples 
  6. Responsible for vendor scheduling and onsite management of environmental monitoring, biannual room and hood certifications, facility maintenance personnel, and any additional vendors as needed 
  7. Reviews all documentation and vendor services and files in appropriate location 
  8. Tracks compliance of medication compounding metrics and alerts area leadership to known inconsistencies. Follows up as appropriate. 
  9. Develops and enforces policies and procedures related to quality and compliance 

Additional duties as assigned and/or as opportunities arise.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PTCB Advanced Certification as a Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT), or other advanced certifications or training in compounding 
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulatory standards including Joint Commission, USP <795>, USP <797>, USP <800>, North Carolina Board of Pharmacy standards, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services standards 
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills that are unbiased, professional, and courteous 
  • Comfort with Microsoft applications and data visualization tools 
  • Problem-solving: must be capable of drawing conclusions and formulating actionable plans based upon a synthesis of quantitative and qualitative data. 
  • Organization and Adaptability: must be able to manage several priorities and deadlines simultaneously 

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs
  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time 
  • Must be able to travel offsite as needed

Education Requirements:
● High school diploma or GED. Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy. ·CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA required
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Three years of pharmacy technician experience required or two years of pharmacy technician experience and two years of supervisory experience in related or unrelated field.
