Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in Day Surgery works under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. They are responsible for administering patient care and performing any other duties deemed necessary to assure optimal patient care. Will also aide in blood and specimen collection related to the pre-surgical patient. Will perform lab draws and specimen collection for patients of the laboratory. May have routine interaction and working relationships with patients, family members, providers, and other clinic and hospital employees.
Responsibilities:
• Assumes direct patient care responsibilities as assigned by a licensed nurse. Assist all healthcare providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies during emergency situations. Demonstrates professionalism and flexibility necessary to function in the healthcare environment. Inventories lab and clinical supplies, orders, and restocks supplies as needed.
• Demonstrates active listening and provides emotional support to patients and families. Aids patients in reality orientation, provides informal support to patients/families, and provides assistance with potential aggressive patients. Ensure that emotional and safety needs of patients are met.
• Provides assistance to patients and their families during admission, transfers and discharge of patients. Anticipates patient’s needs. Assist in maintaining the patient environment. Respects and provides patient confidentiality. Assist other staff in completion of their duties. Seeks guidance as needed.
• Demonstrates proper performance of skills reflected and validated by the unit specific orientation/skills checklist. Uses standard precautions and principles of infection control, including collection and accurate preparation of specimens and completely performs lab tests in preparation for surgical procedures, including Covid screening if indicated. Assists with calling and scheduling screening exams to ensure timely results prior to surgery. Adheres to medical waste disposal policies and procedure and adheres to infection control, disinfection and sterilization policies and procedures
• Observes, collects, and documents patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse.

Required
• Current Medical Assistant Certification (AAMA CMA, AMT RMA, NHA CCMA or NCCT NCMA) required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred
• Two (2) years of experience working as a CMA in a clinical setting
