Summary:
The Director of Laboratory is responsible for managing a medical laboratory, including supervision of laboratory staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory Management - Responsible for managing the laboratory, including assessment of personnel and organizational needs. Ensures that resources are available to staff for completion of laboratory procedures. Makes appropriate operation decisions (ie staff, procedures, testing) after considering procedures, policies, accreditation regulations; anticipates the consequences of decisions.
  • Leading People - Responsible for human resources functions which include counseling and administering corrective action in accordance with Health Care Systems policies. Ensures performance appraisals are performed in a timely manner. Ensures timely recruitment of personnel. Ensures training and competency programs are in place for all employees.
  • Budget - Prepares laboratory budget and ensures that laboratory remains within projected operating and capital budgets.
  • Leading Change - Provides leadership for organizational changes. Coordinates projects and services with other departments. Monitors quality of work product for work unit/sector. Leads in change efforts for improvement in work quality. Aligns work unit goals with organizational strategic direction. Participates in formation of strategic goals at the departmental level. Demonstrates corporate citizenship by participating in activities to external assigned work unit/departments. Demonstrates active support of organizational initiatives. Accesses and utilizes appropriate administrative/clinical/financial systems. Acquires and maintains quantitative skills for data analysis.
  • Compliance - Ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines. Maintains familiarity with applicable rules, regulations, and accreditation issues. Ensures work unit is in compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and accreditation issues. Participates in activities designed to monitor and improve compliance.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:
● Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry or Biological Science.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Medical Technologist (MT) certification by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC).
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Five (5) years of Laboratory experience with at least three (3) years of management level experience.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Ability to apply critical decision making, and tailored communications, in a wide variety of complex business scenarios. Strong leadership capability, executing as appropriate in the areas of responsibility. Knowledge of budget planning, financial management and resource management. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
