Summary:
The Histology Technician prepares tissue and fluidic specimen samples for microscopic examination and analysis by a pathologist.
Responsibilities:
• Receives specimens, maintaining traceability and clear recordkeeping. Ensures proper specimen identification and labeling.
• Prepares tissue samples to reveal specific structural details for microscopic examination by pathologist:
o Orients and embeds samples in liquid wax.
o Cuts tissue samples to appropriate thickness using microtome.
o Mounts specimens on slides.
o Stains tissues with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E).
• Prepares cytological specimens to reveal specific cellular details for microscopic examination by pathologist. Centrifuges fluid samples to determine cellularity of sample and select appropriate processing method. Prepares slide for staining and analysis.
• Corresponds with pathologist, performing additional specimen preparation and special stains as needed for further analysis.
• Stores and retrieves samples as required by regulatory agencies. Prepares stored tissue blocks and slides for disposal in accordance with regulatory standards.
• Troubleshoots, documents and initiates appropriate corrective action in response to instrument malfunction, up to and including contact and facilitation of on- or offsite vendor assistance. Monitors level of reagents and control slides and assists in maintaining all supplies.
• Promotes a safe, clean and secure hospital environment for all, including the application of standard precautions and principles of infection control. Maintains laboratory integrity through the application of standard precautions and proper chemical hygiene as per regulatory guidelines.
