Summary:
Responsible for significant squad or unit of the Hospital Police Department.


Responsibilities:
1. Provide direct front line supervision on patrol squads, Criminal Investigations Unit, or Training Unit in a manner ensuring sound professional management practices to develop, implement, and deliver efficient and effective law enforcement and public safety services for the healthcare system.
2. Review officers’ reports of activities and incidents responded to and/or investigated ensuring completeness, thoroughness, and accuracy of detail.
3. Assists in development of and maintains familiarity with pertinent policies and procedures for the department and UNC Hospitals to include the departmental manual, UNC Hospitals Administrative Policy Manual, the Environmental, Health, and Safety Manual, and the Human Resources Policy Manual.
4. Assists and coordinates activities of outside law enforcement agencies and forensic staff involved in providing security for prisoners, as well as other investigations relating to patient, staff, and visitors.
5. Is knowledgeable of hospital incident command procedures and disaster plans and deploys Hospitals Police personnel as appropriate in an emergent situation.
6. Assumes responsibility as the initial UNC Hospitals Incident Commander, until properly relieved.
7. Addresses and resolves all personnel concerns in a proactive and timely manner, including performance evaluations, corrective actions, HR policy compliance, and other required annual training.
8. Maintain sufficient squad/unit staffing through proper scheduling and time management.
9. Conduct regular roll-call trainings that include, but are not limited to, the following topics: recent court decisions, legal updates, and officer safety and awareness issues.
10. May be responsible for the overall management and supervision of investigative personnel assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and for the timely and successful completion of criminal investigations conducted by the Department.
11. May be responsible for ensuring thorough training of new personnel to include management and oversight of the FTO, In-service, and ongoing training functions.

Education Requirements:
● High School diploma or GED
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● - Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
● - Must be at least 20 years old and be a US Citizen
● -  Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
● - OC Spray (Pepper Spray) certification within the first six (6) months of hire (the probationary period)
● - TASER certification, within the first six (6) months of hire (the probationary period)
● - Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) certification within the first six (6 months of hire (the probationary period)
● - Crisis Preventions Institute (CPI) certification within the first six (6 months of hire (the probationary period)
● - Must qualify with a passing score with issued duty weapon on the department’s qualification course of fire within the first six (6) months of hire
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Three (3) years of progressively responsible law enforcement work experience as a commissioned Police Officer and at least (1) year of law enforcement supervisory experience.
● Associate Degree and one (1) year of progressively responsible law enforcement work experience as a commissioned Police Officer and at least (1) year of law enforcement supervisory experience.
● If a High School diploma or GED : has accumulated at least thirty-two (32) education and/or training points and at least eight (8) years of progressively responsible law enforcement work experience as a commissioned Police Officer, and at least one (1) year of law enforcement supervisory experience ORHas accumulated at least forty (40) education and/or training points and at least six (6) years of progressively responsible law enforcement work experience as a commissioned Police Officer, and at least one (1) year of law enforcement supervisory experience ORHas accumulated at least forty-eight (48) education and/or training points and at least four (4) years of progressively responsible law enforcement work experience as a commissioned Police Officer, and at least one (1) year of law enforcement supervisory experience.
