Rex Health Ventures (RHV) is the venture capital arm of UNC Health. Our mission is to back emerging companies working on technologies that can create strategic advantages and improve patient outcomes. In pursuit of this mission, we evaluate breakthroughs in several domains, including medical device, biotech, tech enabled services, health IT, AI, robotics, and automation. RHV was established in 2012 and has become a leader in our field, to date having executed multiple direct investments in the US, co-investing with leading venture capital and corporate venture capital peers. RHV investments typically range from $2-4M per company, and we are opportunistic in the stage of development, from early to growth stage ventures. We are looking for a Co-Managing Director to join a dynamic team focused on accelerating innovation through venture investing and strategic partnership.
The Co-Managing Director will join a team comprised of the Managing Director, Investment Associate, Portfolio Manager, and Investment Committee, which includes leaders and executives from across UNC Health. This role will be involved in all aspects of the investment and partnership process, including opportunity sourcing, due diligence, and post-investment management.
The purpose of this role is to work individually and with the team to evaluate promising opportunities and help make sound investment decisions via analysis and collaborative debate. This includes:
• Conduct technical, commercial and management team due diligence on potential investment opportunities
• Develop investment thesis for select opportunities and opportunity spaces via debate and analysis with key subject matter experts and members of the Investment Committee
• Source proprietary investment opportunities via and build an investment deal flow pipeline
• Support the Managing Director in devising strategy and direction for activities of the Associate and Portfolio Manager supporting lead generation, investment thesis development, portfolio management and preparation of related materials to support internal and external discussion and presentation
• Serve as board observer or director for selected RHV portfolio companies
• Represent RHV Ventures as a speaker / moderator at industry events
• Build relationships with entrepreneurs, investors, intermediaries, and executives to stay informed of early-stage and growth companies
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with VCs, incubators, and accelerators to create a robust investment pipeline
• Negotiate, structure, execute, and manage investments
• Collaborate and communicate successfully with entrepreneurs, management teams, partners, and other stakeholders, including attorneys, advisors, consultants, and UNC REX and UNC Health executive leaders
• Support the portfolio manager in ongoing relationships with portfolio companies to enhance strategic and financial value for both UNC Health and the portfolio companies • Evaluate and conduct due diligence on specific opportunities to assess attractiveness, including financial modeling of investment targets
• Support the development of investment memoranda and presentations to RHV Investment Committee
• Support content development for website and social media presence to support fund brand and portfolio company marketing
Education Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
● Master’s degree preferred
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● None required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Healthcare system knowledge and experience required. Corporate venture capital experience a strong plus.
● Requires at least eight (8) years of experience at either 1) a healthcare corporate venture fund or 2) a venture capital firm, growth equity, or priviate equity firm investing in healthcare.
● Healthcare system knowledge and experience required. Corporate venture capital experience a strong plus.
● Experience with startup companies, venture capitalists, commercial partnerships, and incubators.
