Summary

The Director, Operative Services serves as the organizational leader for the operating room and central sterile departments. This position reports to the SVP/Chief Nursing Officer and serves as an active participant and coordinator on the Department of Surgery Committee and Operating Room Committee. As the operative services leader, this position shares 24-hour accountability for the departments under its supervision. Responsibilities include assisting department managers with planning, coordinating and directing the fiscal, staff and patient care activities to assure that standards of care and standards of practice are met as appropriate for the patient care needs and the age of the patient in a cost-effective manner as possible. The Operative Services Director is responsible for the integration of department(s) into the overall functioning of the organization.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Establishes and articulates a philosophy of nursing and patient care consistent with the mission and vision of UNC Health Wayne. Ensures that standards of care and practice are consistent with other areas of nursing care. Reviews, establishes, and revises policies, procedures, and standards related to operative services. Develops goals and objectives based on UNC Health Wayne’s mission, values, and initiatives. Facilitates integration of Operative Services with nursing and other decision-making structures of the Hospital.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates programs to maximize clinical outcomes, functional status, patient/customer satisfaction and reimbursement. Creates and exceeds the standard of knowledge for patient/customer expectations and best practices. Ensures that the service standards established for the areas of responsibility are met or exceeded. Uses patient/customer satisfaction data to improve systems, processes and outcomes. Identifies and implements solutions to elevate the patient care experience. Establishes targets and benchmarks that are attainable and measurable.
  • Ensures the most effective operation of the departments is obtained through program development, process improvement and the coordination/integration of processes with other departments. Demonstrates knowledge relative to the types of patients, procedures, materials, and equipment incurred and utilized in acute inpatient and outpatient nursing services. Maintains competence in assigned clinical settings.
  • Keeps the SVP, Patient Care Services/CNO informed of department outcomes and makes recommendations, as necessary, for reducing operational costs and increasing revenue based on knowledge of market trends, operating procedures and reimbursement matters.
  • Represents operative services in various meetings and organizations. Coordinates and effectively communicates administrative functions with all patient care departments. Establishes procedures to study the effectiveness of operative service processes in relation to the objectives and cost to the hospital. Knowledge of local, state, and federal standards, recommendations, laws, and regulations pertaining to nursing. Responsible for coordinating and ensuring compliance with all State/Federal and Joint Commission surveys and inspections
  • Defines and achieves financial targets in support of business goals. Oversees the annual operating budget for Surgical Services, including direct labor, material and supplies, services, equipment maintenance and replacement.
  • In partnership with the SVP/CNO and Human Resources, makes recommendations on teammate hires, corrective actions, terminations, promotions and similar actions. Completes performance appraisals for the unit, completes teammate incident reports, and ensures correction of deficiencies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to make timely and appropriate decisions based on analysis, experience, education, and judgment. Demonstrates ability to provide leadership and create an environment for participatory management. Exhibits a personal interest and hands-on approach to driving operational changes. Engages teammates to drive operational changes and to be accountable for results. Creates a professional working climate that encourages people to perform at their best. Ability to communicate clearly and assign responsibility, set clear objectives, monitor progress, provides appropriate feedback both positive and constructive. Clearly coveys the organizational strategic plan to teammates.
  • Demonstrates financial, operational, and technical savvy in driving and promoting quality and cost-effective patient care in an environment that is elevating its fiscal and operational discipline, by bringing the requisite hands-on business planning, strategic and operational skills that determine both short-term and long-term goals. Establishes fiscal discipline at the departmental and unit levels. 


Qualifications

    Education

    BSN Degree required in nursing, healthcare, business, or a related field. MSN preferred.

    Licensure/
    Certification

    Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
    CNOR or CPAN preferred. Basic life support (BLS) required.

    Experience

    Three years' minimum of progressive nursing leadership experience is required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    · Proven track record of success in nursing leadership to include improving employee (teammate) engagement and patient satisfaction, identifying process efficiencies, and building collaborative relationships across all levels.
    · Proven leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, etc. to lead, guide and motivate others.
    · Superior communication, facilitation, negotiation and listening skills. Must be able to foster open communication and be receptive to the ideas and suggestions of others.


    · Excellent analytical, critical/creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
    · Effective organization and time management skills that include the ability to rapidly prioritize and adjust work flow according to changing patient and department needs.
    · Proficient with MS Office and EMR, with the ability to learn new software rapidly.
    · Ability to stand, walk and meet the physical requirements of the job for the duration of shift.
