Job Summary:
Provides patient clinical data or microscopic findings to assist pathologists in the preparation of pathology reports. Studies cells to detect evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities, and other pathological conditions.
Description of Job Responsibilities:
Maintains an environment of safety for patients, self and others.
Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other bodily exudates, fixing and staining the slides to preserve the specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
Examines slides under a microscope to identify abnormalities and documents interpretation results according to department protocol.
Reports abnormalities to Pathologist and sends out follow-up letters to physicians of patients with high-grade Pap smears.
Assists physicians in fine needle aspiration and specimen collection.
Monitors screening workload statistics of each Cytotechnologist and insures laboratory compliance with CLIA slide screening workload limits, CAP PAP program, and other quality assurance and regulatory activities.
Performs and monitors quality control programs, including 10% re-screening of Pap smears, high-grade look-back data collection, and other quality improvement activities.
Provides guidance, writes and reviews cytology procedures, and assures technical personnel follow documented methods and procedures.
Assists medical personnel and/or patients in the coordination of patient testing and/or cytology specimen handling and functions as charge person in the absence of the Technical Supervisor.
Assists manager in monitoring usage of equipment, supplies, and personnel to insure maximum utilization and cost effectiveness.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree and completion of a one (1) year training program in an American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited school of Cytology.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
CT(ASC) certified by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) within one year of hire date.
Professional Experience Requirements:
Requires three (3) years or related laboratory experience.
