Summary:

The NAI is responsible for administering direct patient care and performing other duties deemed necessary to insure optimal patient care, under the direction and supervision of a professional nurse. The NAI performs duties, such as feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, or moving patients or changing linens


Responsibilities:

1. Ensures a safe, secure, and orderly patient environment

a. Follows safety and infection control principles

    1. Completes patient care assignments by defined policies and procedures
    2. Provides one-one observation for patients as delegated.
    3. Provides patient comfort and hygiene measures
      • Universal precautions and isolation procedures are followed. Safety precautions are implemented; hazardous waste is properly disposed. Adheres to all safety policies, including the Safe Patient Handling protocols

2. Meets patients’ physical and psychosocial needs

    1. Recognizes changes in patients’ conditions and reports changes to Registered Nurse
    2. Completes patient care tasks as assigned
    3. Responds promptly to patient/family requests
    4. Turns and repositions as patients’ needs dictate
    5. Assists patients with activities of daily living
    6. Ensures patient rooms are neat and organized for maximized comfort
    7. Collects urine, fecal, or sputum specimen
      • Recognizes abnormal values in vital signs, intake and output, etc. and reports promptly to the Primary/Charge Nurse. All tasks are completed for the shift and patients’ needs are responded to promptly.
      • Responds to patients’ call signals are answered in a timely manner
      • Completes duties in an appropriate and timely manner, demonstrating tact, and sensitivity
      • Monitors vital signs
  1. Assists with the delivery of patient care as defined in NAI competencies
    1. Maintains competencies as defined by the nursing area
    2. Delivers patient care guided by competency based skills
      • Core competencies are validated in the initial 90 days and continue to be performed correctly. Additional skills will be maintained and verified periodically.

4. Performs duties in accordance with hospital policy and philosophy.

    1. Promotes and exhibits positive customer relations.
    2. Supports and works within the parameters of hospital policies.
    3. Certified by NCSBON and functions within the Scope of Practice for NA I.
    4. Cross trains as needed to other units, role of Monitor Tech and Health Unit Secretary.
      • Responds to customer needs and provides a "customer friendly" environment within the workplace. Works within the guidelines of hospital policy, scope of practice and maintains standards described in such.

  • EDUCATION
    • High school graduate or equivalent. Completion of North Carolina(NC) Board of Nursing approved Nursing Assistant course.
  • EXPERIENCE
    • None required
  • LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
    • Certified by the N. C. Department of Facility Services as a NAI. BCLS Certification.
