JOB SUMMARY

The System Manager of Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) will be responsible for the administration, implementation, and oversight of the UNC Health Care System Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Program. This position will report to the Health Care System Director of HIM Coding & CDI. The Manager is responsible for managing the CDI functions with appropriate personnel (CDI Specialists, CDI DRG Physician Advisors, support services, and associated supervisors, etc.) to meet the overall needs of health care system, while ensuring compliance with state/federal requirements, and CMS guidelines. Additionally, the Manager is responsible for ensuring processes are conducted efficiently and in a high quality manner to meet service level agreement (SLA) expectations and regulatory standards for CDI.

100% remote This is a remote position eligible for hire from: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. 



DESCRIPTION OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, 

1. Lead and manage centralized CDI services for UNC Health Care System. Work collaboratively with HCS Director HIM Coding & CDI and key physician leaders to reach the goals and objectives of the CDI Program. Actively participate and support the CDI governance structure responsible for achieving clinical and operational excellence, and expected deliverables in relation to the CDI Program.
2. Coordinate modifications to clinical documentation to ensure accurate depiction of the level of clinical services and patient severity to support appropriate reimbursement and capturing of clinical severity for the level of service rendered to all hospitalized patients. Manage and coordinate concurrent inpatient reviews for severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, hospital acquired conditions, patient safety indicators, and other quality indicators, SOI/ROM, and DRG Management clinical documentation reviews including rounding and educating providers on optimal clinical documentation. Manage and coordinate outpatient reviews for severity of illness, hierarchical condition categories, and level of service rendered.
3. Identify process improvement opportunities for CDI teams to ensure quality outcomes. Oversee the development, implementation, dissemination, and adherence to policy and procedures related to CDI activities. Participate in organizational initiatives relative to coding and CDI technology to improve accuracy and compliance. Serve as subject matter expert on accurate and appropriate coding and documentation standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
4. Serve on local and/or system committees, councils, focus groups and work teams associated with advancing the revenue cycle strategy of the health care system upon request. Such participation may require travel, including overnight travel to affiliate locations. Participate in revenue cycle leadership touchpoint interactions and meetings with affiliate leadership groups upon request of System Director.
5. Lead and supervise System Supervisors of CDI and CDI activities for the UNC Health Care System (HCS). Assign duties and tasks to System Supervisors of CDI. Monitor workload and make appropriate adjustments. Monitor and maintain staff productivity and quality standards. Coach for performance and reward and recognize accomplishments.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS, 

Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management OR Bachelor's degree in Nursing.


LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS, 

AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) RHIT or RHIA certification OR Coding/CDI Certification CCS (AHIMA), CPC-H (AAPC), CCDS (ACDIS), CDIP (AHIMA)

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS, 

Ten (10) years of direct experience.
Five (5) years of management experience in a formal leadership role (director, manager/coordinator).


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS, Modified, Modified

Previous CDI experience required. Strong knowledge of ICD-10/CPT/HCPCS coding and CDI documentation processes with excellent analytical and data mining skills. Ability to effectively manage projects, plan and implement programs, and evaluate outcomes. Ability to effectively manage and direct various levels of staff, including on-site and remote, as well as manage vendor relationships and expectations relative to CDI. Must possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Exhibit effective organizational skills, time management, management of multiple priorities, and strong project management skills. Ability to make effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics to upper management and physicians. Ability to interpret federal and state regulations as they relate to coding and compliance.
