Summary:

Operates as a key member of the health care team using the nursing process. Clinical skills and leadership to direct, provide, and evaluate age specific patient care according to the department’s scope of service.


Responsibilities:

1. Utilizes the nursing process:

a. Collect patient data.

    1. Analyze the data to determine diagnosis.
    2. Identify expected outcomes.
    3. Plan care.
    4. Implement interventions identified in the plan.
    5. Evaluate the patient’s progress towards outcomes.
    6. Utilizes the nursing process to efficiently perform comprehensive triage.
      • Documents nursing process and nursing assessment in nurses’ notes as outlined in ED policy and procedure. Responds appropriately to emergency situations. Interventions are appropriate and outcomes evaluated based on data collection and interpretation relevant to health status of patient. Changes in the plan of care are made as the patient progresses to promote positive outcome with improvement in health status. ACLS required within six months.

2. Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of their nursing practice.

    1. Participates in the department CQI process.
    2. Uses the results to initiate changes in practice.
    3. Use the results to initiate system changes.
      • Participates in department CQI by:
      • Identifying important aspects of care.
      • Collecting data.
      • Analyzing results.
      • Formulating recommendations.
      • Involving other disciplines.
      • Changing their individual practice.

3. Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice.

    1. Participates in ongoing educational activities.
    2. Seeks experiences to maintain skills.
    3. Seeks knowledge, skills appropriate to setting.
      • Completes mandatory training each year, plus 16 minimal hours for staff development model.
        • ACLS within one year of being in the ED.
        • ENPC preferred
        • PALS preferred.
        • TNCC preferred.

4. Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others.

    1. Shares knowledge with colleagues and others.
    2. Provides constructive feedback.
      • Participates in staff development model, serves as a preceptor for new staff and students. Provides constructive feedback to peers. Provides yearly inservices to staff to promote education and professional growth. Identifies areas of specific interest to excel and serve as preceptor to staff, to promote excellent and professional growth.

5. Makes decisions and takes action on the behalf of patients in an ethical manner.

    • Consistently maintains privacy and confidentiality. Promotes customer satisfaction through responsive, non-judgmental, respectful, and professional behavior. Serves as an advocate for patients and their families. Sensitive to client diversity. Follows policies and procedures when dealing with outside agencies.

6. Uses research findings in their practice.

    1. Uses interventions substantiated by research.
    2. Participates in research as appropriate to the nurses’ position.
      • Patient interventions identified as substantiated by research. Participates in improvement/redesign processes.

7. Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care.

    1. Evaluates factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost when two or more practice options would result in the same outcomes.
    2. Assists patients in identifying and secure appropriate services available to address health related needs.
      • Maintains safe and therapeutic physical environment. Is aware of cost effectiveness, safety, and patient outcomes when identifying and utilizing available post-discharge resources.

8. Collaborates with patient, significant others, and health care providers in providing care.

    1. Consults with other providers as needed.
    2. Make referrals for continuity of care.
      • Communicates critical patient information in a timely and effective manner to all disciplines as evidenced in nurse documentation. Utilizes all available resources for referrals for continuity of care. Communicates information to patient/family members and evaluates family and patient’s understanding of information provided.

9. Participation in community activities.

    • Participates yearly in community injury prevention education efforts.


Other information:

  • EDUCATION
    • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • EXPERIENCE
    • None required for beginning nurse/new graduates. Requirements for specialty areas are defined as 1-2 years of experience in specialty area or related clinical experience.
  • LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
    • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina; BLS certification, ACLS certification within one year. Additional certifications such as PALS, TNCC, and ENPC encouraged but not required.
