Summary:
The Psychiatric Emergency Clinician serves a pivotal role in the psychiatric emergency care team by providing expert clinical assessment, evaluation, and treatment planning for assigned patients in an Emergency Room setting.


Responsibilities:
• Performs psychiatric assessments of patients presenting to the hospital emergency department and assists, as needed, the emergency room physician and the on-call psychiatrist in developing disposition plans.
• Obtains, interprets and documents clinical observation regarding patients and families, including bio-psychosocial history factors, and communicates to interdisciplinary care team.
• Reviews patients in waiting and triage areas to anticipate and guide response to patients presenting with evidence of potential behavioral health crises
• Manages the Involuntary Commitment process. Appears before the magistrate and presents documentation. Coordinates admissions that meet criteria.
• Assesses and documents bio-psychosocial needs and prepares a formal intervention plan to suit.
• Evaluates and identifies possible or actual patient/family crises, providing crisis intervention and emotional support, and creating and facilitating effective plans for resolution.
• Delivers information and short-term therapeutic counseling to patients and their families in relation to social, psychological, financial, and family situations.
• Refers patients and families to appropriate community assistance resources.
Develops and maintains relationships with outside community health and social agencies. Monitors ongoing and new community resources for meeting patient needs.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in a human services field or similar, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Four (4) years of experience performing psychiatric emergency care
Preferred
• Master’s degree in a human services field or similar
• Experience performing substance abuse counseling
