POSITION SUMMARY: 

Provides crisis intervention, group and/or individual intervention techniques, and escalation techniques to patients within the Emergency Department (ED) and Medical Units. Develops on-going therapeutic plans for patients for the duration of time at UNC Health Nash ED or medical unit. Collaborates with other agencies to improve patient outcomes post-discharge. Assists with assuring patient safety of behavioral health patients. Assists with psychosocial / mental health / substance abuse assessments to individuals (and families as indicated) presenting to Emergency Department as needed. Addresses frequent ED utilization of behavioral health patients by collaboration with outside agencies and providers. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Provides crisis intervention and counseling to Emergency Department and Medical Units. 

• Address Frequent ED Utilization. 

• Performs psychosocial, mental health, and substance abuse assessments and collaborates with healthcare providers in the development of a plan for safe disposition. 

• Communicates appropriately and effectively with the patient, family, staff, and members of the patient care team. 

• Assists in appropriate discharge planning and patient disposition. 

• Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate counseling, crisis intervention, and discharge planning based on the age of the patients served. 

• Models professional behavior. Participates in self-development.

 • Performs other duties as assigned. 


EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS AND TRAINING: 

Required: 

Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling 

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) 

Valid NC Driver’s License BLS, Required within 90 days of hire. 

CPI, Required within 90 days of hire. 

Preferred: 

Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS)

EXPERIENCE: 

Required: 

Minimum of two years’ paid experience in social work, mental health counseling, or behavioral health setting 

Preferred: 

Experience in working with acute psychiatric diagnoses, crisis intervention. 

ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: 

Incumbent must demonstrate the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively and appropriately to the unique needs of psychiatric, mental health, substance abuse, dual diagnosis, sexual assault, abuse / neglect patients of all ages -pediatric through geriatric. Must have the ability to develop a therapeutic plan based on the individual’s unique needs. Must demonstrate effective, professional communication with coworkers and professionals at other facilities. Must have the ability to identify a potential crisis and intervene without being instructed. Must be self-motivated and possess independent critical thinking.
