Summary:
This position will provide comprehensive psychology services to patients of Bariatric Surgery and patient working with the Medical Obesity team with duties to include evaluations, clinical consultation, patient and family counseling (e.g., understanding of bariatric surgical procedures and medical obesity care pathways, emotional adaptation to disease, adjustment to procedures, adherence to medical regimen), and collaboration during team meetings, multi-disciplinary conferences, regarding patient management strategies. Please note that this position is 90-100% Direct Patient Care via clinical assessments/evaluations, individual counseling, group counseling, and other direct patient services.

This position is located at UNC Rex NC Surgery-Bariatrics. This position is Hybrid. 

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide Psychological Evaluations 

  • Conduct Initial Assessments: Meet with patients to understand their mental health status, history, and current concerns. This involves structured interviews, standardized testing, and observational methods. 
  • Diagnose Mental Health Conditions: Use diagnostic criteria (such as DSM-5) to identify mental health disorders. This requires a thorough understanding of psychological symptoms and their implications. 
  • Develop Treatment Plans: Based on the evaluation, create tailored treatment plans that may include therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or referrals to other specialists. 
  • Collaborate with Other Professionals: Work with psychiatrists, social workers, and other healthcare providers to ensure a comprehensive approach to patient care. 

Provide Follow-Up Consultation for Patients and Their Families 

  • Ongoing Therapy Sessions: Conduct regular therapy sessions to monitor progress, address new issues, and adjust treatment plans as needed. This may include individual, group, or family therapy. 
  • Education and Support: Educate patients and their families about the diagnosed condition, treatment options, and coping strategies. Provide resources and support to help them manage the condition effectively. 
  • Crisis Intervention: Be available for urgent consultations in case of mental health crises, providing immediate support and adjusting care plans accordingly. 

Provide Follow-Up Services as Needed 

  • Regular Monitoring: Schedule and conduct regular check-ins to assess the patient’s progress and adherence to the treatment plan. Adjust the plan based on these evaluations. 
  • Coordinate with Community Resources: Connect patients and their families with community resources such as support groups, rehabilitation programs, and other relevant services. 
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed records of all evaluations, consultations, and follow-up services. Ensure that all documentation complies with legal and ethical standards. 
  • Feedback and Adjustments: Gather feedback from patients and their families about the effectiveness of the treatment and make necessary adjustments to improve outcomes.

Education Requirements:
● Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Currently licensed as a Psychologist and eligible to practice in the state of North Carolina or within three months of start date.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Previous experience highly preferred but not required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

Understanding of Health Psychology, Bariatric Medicine, Eating Disorders and Eating Disturbances. Skilled in use of counseling theory and culturally responsive approaches to clinical mental health.
