Summary:

UNC Health Care is recruiting for multiple Child Life Assistant PD positions to join our UNC Children’s Hospital team located on the beautiful campus of UNC Chapel Hill. As a top-tier academic medical center, UNC Children’s hospital upholds a four-tiered mission to “CARE,” aligning clinical care, advocacy, research, and education to deliver world-class, family-centered care – always regardless of a family’s ability to pay. UNC Children’s clinical home, N.C. We are seeking aspiring child life specialists to assist our team in implementing programs that support patient and family coping and adjustment to healthcare experiences. The ideal candidate has excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and initiative to see and address the ever-evolving needs of our patients and families.

This position offers variable hours, Sunday through Saturday between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm, including holiday options.  


Responsibilities:

  1. Provides and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment including age-appropriate supplies in compliance with safety and infection control policies (e.g., toy cleaning). Regularly inspects toys, materials and play area for safety, infection control and appropriateness for the population; maintains knowledge of toy recalls and removes identified toys and materials.
  2. Assists child life specialists and aftercare program coordinators in implementing patient care and family support programs. May schedule, organize, and facilitate special events that are appropriate for patients, families, and staff in collaboration with child life colleagues and other care providers.
  3. Assists patients with accessing pediatric play facilities.
  4. Provides a variety of developmentally supportive play opportunities for patient and siblings including structured and planned activities, in activity spaces and at the bedside.
  5. Effectively communicates observations regarding children's behaviors and emotional state to the healthcare team.
  6. Supports the donations team in donor engagement. Assists in the selection of toys and materials, including the ordering, receiving, storing and distribution of supplies and donations.
  7. Maintains equipment and the working environment in a neat and orderly manner according to departmental procedures. Requests needed equipment and supplies on a timely basis.
  8. Provides training and supervision for child life volunteers.

● High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) required.
● Child life coursework in progress or completed (preferred).
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Related hospital and/or pediatric experience and/or training desired.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Language skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
● Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
● Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
