Summary:
The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant provides surgical assistance during the procedures and performs technical skills under the direct supervision of the surgeon commensurate with his or her training and skill level. This person additionally may assist the registered nurse in creating a safe supportive and comforting environment for the patient in surgery.


Responsibilities:
Patient and families are served in providing direct patient care services. Perform duties and conducts interpersonal relationships with co-workers, physicians, and other departments in a manner designed to project a positive image of the department and hospital.

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School graduate. Graduate of approved academic course for surgical technologist first assistant.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Previous experience as surgical technologist first assistant required.

LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
Certification from National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA), Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) required, or National Board Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA, Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFSA) required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Good interpersonal and communication skills, good manual dexterity, ability to work as a team member, ability to accept criticism, willingness to learn and cooperate, displays calm in acute stressful situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Exposure to BBP requiring the use of personal protective equipment, exposure to other infectious diseases, exposure to radiation, chemicals, airborne pathogens and electrical hazards. Exposed to temperature variations related to patient and/or equipment needs. Lighting may range from dark to bright. May experience stressful work periods. Exposure to hazardous anesthetic agents, subject to hazards of flammable, explosive gases. Taking call is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT
Must be able to engage in the following physical activities on a daily basis:
Lengthy periods of standing.
Moving stretchers, carts and equipment.
Carrying and lifting instrument sets (trays) and various items of equipment.
Maintain emotional stability.
Assists with positioning of patients.
