Job Summary |
The Hospital Police Lieutenant, under limited supervision of the Director, Chief of Police manages and directs employees (teammates) of the WMH Company Police Department. The Hospital Police Major performs difficult protective work; serves as the Director in the Director's absence; covers shifts for sergeants as necessary; identifies potential security problem areas and provides corrective advice and action; ensures all directives, new instructions, and general information from the Director is communicated to all shift personnel (teammates), and performs other duties as required. Assists in planning department programs and operating procedures. Assists with preparing the annual budget and strategic plan. |
Minimum Qualifications | ||
Education | High School diploma or GED required. Associate degree or higher level of education preferred. Extensive experience with progressive responsibility in police services supervision or equivalent combination of education and experience. | |
Licensure/ Certification | · A valid North Carolina Driver’s License and a driving record that will allow for insurance coverage. · Intermediate Law Enforcement Certification through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission is required with an Advanced Law Enforcement Certification preferred. · NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: As set forth in N.C.G.S. 74E-8, applicants for commission as a company police officer and a commissioned company police officer must meet and maintain the same minimum pre-employment and in-service standards as are required for State law enforcement officers by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission, and must meet or maintain any other pre-employment and in-service requirements set by the Attorney General. Out-of-State candidates should have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. · Out-of-State candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered. Out-of-State candidates cannot have a break in service from the out of state agency of more than one year. All out-of-state candidates may possibly have to complete 96 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC certification, pass the State exam or other requirements set forth by the North Carolina Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission. · Criminal Justice Instructor Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year. · IAHSS Supervisor Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year.

Experience | · Seven years of supervisory experience is required, preferably in a healthcare or campus law enforcement setting. | |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | · Leadership qualities, e.g., maturity, job knowledge, professionalism, communication skills, etc. to lead, guide and motivate others. · Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English. · Proficient with MS Office and able to learn new software rapidly. | |
Valid NC Driver’s License | ☒ Yes ☐ No | If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management. |
