Summary:

The Communications Specialist for the Department of Surgery at UNC Health plays a vital role in managing internal and external communications for the department. This position focuses on crafting, distributing, and managing content that promotes the department’s clinical, educational, and research initiatives. They are responsible for creating and promoting the “brand” of UNC Department of Surgery, as well as the faculty and staff within the DOS. The ideal candidate will excel at building relationships, enhancing brand awareness, and aligning messaging across various platforms to reach diverse audiences, including faculty, staff, patients, media, and the public.

Responsibilities:

Content Creation & Management: 

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to promote the department's clinical services, educational programs, and research advancements. 
  • Write, edit, and distribute a variety of content, including newsletters, press releases, website articles, and social media posts. 
  • Coordinate with the faculty, surgeons, and leadership team to ensure accurate and compelling storytelling of key departmental initiatives. 
  • Gather and populate new faculty and trainee profiles, including headshots and welcome slides for lobby displays. 
  • Create and distribute e-newsletters featuring messages from the Chair, awards, patient stories, recent events, and upcoming events. 
  • Develop magazine-style newsletters twice a year, including innovation content, research updates, and alumni news. 

Digital & Social Media Management:

  • Regularly update and maintain the department’s website, ensuring it is up-to-date, user-friendly, and reflective of the department's goals.
  • Manage and grow the department’s social media presence, creating content tailored to each platform (Instagram, Facebook, etc.).
  • Monitor existing videos on YouTube for content relevance, respond to external comments. Upload, edit, and disseminate content via YouTube as requested.
  • Analyze digital metrics to track performance and make data-driven decisions to optimize content and campaigns.
  • Attend quarterly meetings as Digital Accessibility Liaison and ensure all external content adheres to digital accessibility standards.

Internal/External Communications:

  • Assist in the development and dissemination of internal communication materials, including newsletters, announcements, and memos to faculty, staff, and residents.
  • Serve as a liaison between the department and internal stakeholders to streamline communication across different teams.
  • Add or remove faculty and staff from the listserv as needed and resolve technical glitches with SOM IT.
  • Send content to health system communications/marketing team PR (Vital Signs, SOM Communications office, Healthcare Communications & Marketing office)
  • Develop and disseminate both paper and electronic materials promoting the faculty and department in the Department of Surgery.
  • Liaison with the Outreach and Marketing teams at the SOM and UNC Health.

Event Support: 

  • Identify and develop ideas to promote UNC DOS identity and culture through events and activities that promote engagement. 
  • Collaborate on organizing and promoting departmental events, such as symposiums, seminars, and outreach initiatives. 
  • Create promotional materials for events and manage event communications across platforms. 

Other Information

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Marketing or related field.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • No licensure or certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
  • Three (3) year of experience in communications, public relations, marketing or related field.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong project management and organizational abilities.
    • Proficiency with digital tools such as website content management systems, email marketing software, and social media platforms.
    • Experience with graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
