We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Lab Director to lead our laboratory operations at UNC Health Rex. In this pivotal role, you will oversee the comprehensive business and financial management of multiple departments, including Microbiology, Hematology, Core Lab, Blood Banking, Transfusion Services, Phlebotomy, Cytology, and Histology.
As Lab Director, you will be responsible for strategic budgeting, personnel management, and optimizing operational workflows to enhance efficiency and quality. Your expertise will drive the implementation of growth initiatives that elevate departmental performance and ensure the highest standards of service delivery across all laboratory functions. This position is eligible for a commitment incentive of $15,000 for a two-year term, along with relocation assistance to support your transition.
Please note: The ideal candidate for this role must have direct hospital leadership experience, including management of laboratory operations in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities:
1. Maintains an environment of safety for patients, self and others.
2. Plans, organizes and directs overall programs and activities for the Laboratory. Directs the integration of services within department and throughout the organization.
3. Develops operational plan(s) for the Laboratory. Directs and leads teams to achieve targeted results.
4. Completes budgets and submits for approval for the Laboratory. Recommends types and amount of resources required.
5. Approves and oversees the allocation of resources based upon organizational, divisional and departmental goals and objectives for services. Holds managers accountable for their assigned budgets. Reports variances and takes corrective action.
6. Monitors operations, culture, and work environment for services. Holds direct reports accountable for same as appropriate.
7. Reviews and reports financial and operational data evaluating quality of service, workload, revenue and expenses. Takes corrective action.
8. Directs quality control and performance management and improvement activities to include patient safety within the departments.
9. Develops plans and feasibility analyses for expansion/change in services or activities. Prepares and submits recommendations for facility plans.
10. Negotiates as appropriate including preparing and signing contracts.
11. Provides direction for the delivery of cost effective, quality patient care or service based on established regulatory, professional and organizational standards within the context of the operating vision.

Education Requirements:
● Master's degree with at least five years of lab management experience
● If a Bachelor's degree: 9 years of experience of lab management experience
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● MLT preferred
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Minimum of five years of lab management experience with Master’s or nine years of lab management experience with Bachelor’s.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
