Summary:
As the Executive Director of Construction for NC Children's (NCC), this role will play a pivotal part in shaping the future of pediatric healthcare in the region. The Executive Director will be responsible for collaborating with the VP of Real Estate, Development & Facilities (REDF) at NC Children’s on the development and construction of the campus, ensuring alignment with the overall mission and vision.
Responsibilities:
Construction & Development: Lead real estate construction efforts for the NC Children's campus, including all phases of project development—from cost estimation, schematic design, design development to permitting and construction. Strategically lead the construction procurement process for CMs, including working with legal on contract review. Collaborate with project partners (e.g., architects, engineers, design professionals) to ensure campus development aligns with the master plan. In partnership with the VP of REDF and NCC senior leadership, plan and prioritize campus initiatives to align with the NCC vision. Direct stakeholder engagement and communication throughout all project phases (including planning, construction, delivery, and facilities). Ensure project adherence to NCC campus design and construction guiding principles. Monitor project progress and ensure compliance with construction specifications.
Governance & Communication: Implement governance and communication structures for real estate initiatives, including outlining key milestones and requirements to stay on schedule, within scope, and on budget. Direct and facilitate forums for decision-making and foster a sense of ownership. Provide regular updates on the NCC campus project status to key stakeholders and team members.
Relationship Building: In conjunction with the VP of REDF, build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders throughout all phases of campus planning, development, and construction. Proactively identify opportunities to enhance buy-in and establish trust.
Leading People: Guide others toward fulfilling NCC’s mission and vision while creating an inclusive and collaborative workplace. Foster a team culture of trust, accountability, and excellence.
Leading Change: Clearly communicate project direction and status, particularly required decisions (and timelines) that could impact progress. Proactively identify and implement mitigation strategies to maintain momentum or course correct as needed.
Results Oriented: Collaborate closely with project partners and team members to ensure high-quality results and alignment with the mission and vision. The Executive Director will also play a key role in keeping the project on track and within budget by effectively managing and tracking expenditures and commitments.

Education Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree in a construction management or related engineering field. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● None required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Requires ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience and seven (7) years of management experience in large-scale healthcare construction/development projects such as new hospitals, campuses, bed towers, medical office buildings, academic medical facilities, and research facilities.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Understands and applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, data analytics, and policies related to healthcare construction.
● Demonstrated collaborative skills.
● Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
● In-depth understanding of the Construction Manager (CM) contracting process.
● Comprehensive knowledge of internal hospital, ASC, MOB, and campus infrastructure distribution systems and alignment with the facilities served.
● Thorough understanding of building and campus system activation and operational continuity through phased construction.
● Extensive subject matter expertise and knowledge of NFPA and other healthcare regulatory agencies (DHSR, Joint Commission, CMS, etc.).
● Proven track record of pragmatism, sound judgment, and balanced risk management.
