Description

Oncology Nurse Navigators in this role will be per diem and will be members of the Outpatient Float Pool. Their role will be to provide supplemental support to the oncolology navigators. The candidate must possess excellent verbal and written skills, strong organizational, prioritization skills, time management, and strong leadership and interpersonal skills. The candidate must possess the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with the healthcare teams. Basic working knowledge of managed care, insurance coverage, procedures, and community resources preferred, but can be learned. Prior knowledge of Epic a plus.

Description of Job/Responsibilities:
• Provides individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers.
• Responsible for identifying potential and realized barriers to care and facilitating referrals as appropriate to mitigate barriers and expedite the plan of care.
• Interviews patients regarding their current health practices, identifies health problems, determines the degree of compliance and problems complying with the prescribed treatment plan, and documents this information in the patient's chart.
• Analyzes data from patient interviews, chart reviews, clinic preparation, and physical assessments to determine patient's nursing care needs including direct care and referrals to other departments.
• Interacts with referring physician's offices for new and ongoing patient care issues.
• The candidate will interface with various healthcare teams to facilitate timely complex coordination of appointments, diagnostic testing, medical forms, and procedures, referrals both internal and externally.
• Provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum.

Professional Experience
-Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience with one (1) being in oncology.
-Basic life saving certification required.

License/Certification
-Licensed as a registered nurse in the State of North Carolina.
-Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred but not required at date of hire. Must obtain certification within two years of hire.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from a state-accredited school of professional nursing. Two (2) years of nursing experience and one (1) year in the area of oncology specialization.

 

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. Oncology Nursing Certification (ONC) within two (2) years of employment. (Must maintain ONC credentials throughout employment.) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.

This is a State position employed by UNC Health Care System.
