Job Description


The Clinical Improvement Specialist is accountable and responsible for ensuring roll-out and update of a clinical measure-based programmatic suite of services to UNC HCS entities that are tied to UNC HCS initiatives governed by PPMC, QIOC, and Health Alliance. 

Clinical improvement Specialist are expected to be the liaison between clinics they support, the Population Health Team, [email protected] training, strategic ePEC governance and Epic development, the [email protected], the PCIC Coaches, and Executive Committees of UNC Health Care. Must be capable of working independently with limited direct supervision, and have extensive Epic, MS Office and broad-based clinical knowledge, based on the CMA scope. Presentation and Public Speaking experience is ideal for the right candidate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Accountability for creating correct Epic documentation for strategic initiatives, improving process efficiency and outcomes to support the ongoing transformation of clinical and operational processes to move towards value-based models of care and reimbursement and other duties/projects as needed to support the institution through the use of Epic. 
  • Provides Epic knowledge in the Ambulatory environment and ability to work with physicians, clinicians, operations, business office, front desk, back office, revenue cycle, including: Creating SmartPhrases and SmartLists, Building templates for providers for office visits, Assisting providers in Epic and their workflow to achieve best practices, Building preference lists – including internal and external order knowledge, Understanding health maintenance logic, build, modifiers, Comfortable working with BPA’s including the logic, build, and workflows, and knowing the correct locations for documentation in Epic for HM, BPA’s, PQRS, PCMH, and MIPS/MACRA. 
  • Work with the clinics to ensure documentation is being captured in the correct fields during their rooming process workflow. 
  • Assisting with Epic workflow assessments, issues, and resolutions for both provider and clinical staff. 
  • Provider scanning and referral support to assist in the Close the Loop initiative as well as supporting the CASI team 
  • General clinic workflow knowledge to assist in day to day Epic documentation for initiatives and tasks: Providing at-the-elbow support to an assigned group of clinic locations with approximately 80% effort in clinics across a territory in NC. Engage with PCMH/PCIC clinics to identity an Epic Super User at each clinic location and keeping those contacts current on the PQI list. 
  • Scheduling monthly visits with engaged clinics, and meeting as needed with other clinic locations. 
  • Tracking issues internally to surveil trends, issues, or successes. Help clinics understand and utilize Pop Health tools, patient panel, and healthy planet reports. 
  • Keeping the clinics updated on now Epic tools from the Pop Health Solutions team build and changes to Epic workflows. 
  • Effectively follow up and close all issues assigned or identifies issues to management with recommendation on how to proceed.


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have at least three years of experience working in a clinical role in a physician or medical clinic
  • Must have Medical Assistance Certification
  • Previous supervisory or managerial experience is highly desirable

This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Health Care System, in a department that provides shared services to operations across UNC Health Care. This is not a State employed position.
