Job Description


The Business Intelligence Analyst (BIA) provides insight-driven clinical, operational and financial analyses to enhance the organization’s tactical and strategic decision-making in support of UNC Health Alliance Value Care Contracts. The primary responsibilities for the Business Intelligence Analyst include healthcare analytics, scorecard & dashboard development, project management for key initiatives and communications.

A proven track record of developing key strategic relationships with executive leaders and physicians, as well as the ability to optimize self-service BI solutions, leveraging data that spans multiple data sources is key.  In this position you will be partnering with the BI technical team members and working closely with business users and stakeholders. Emphasis will be placed on leading efforts to establish self-service BI and dashboard capabilities and delivering business value through the design and implementation of Tableau solutions.

The ideal candidate is highly skilled in managing claims data, creating visually appealing graphics in Tableau, replicating HEDIS and UNC specific measures. This individual must be able to navigate SQL queries to pull data out of our clinical data warehouse and understand highly technical computer language and payer definitions.


Communication and relationships

  • Acts as a key Business Intelligence & Analytics liaison between hospital leadership, physician leadership, other clinical leaders, ISD and other stakeholders.
  • Ensures a tight linkage between the department's efforts and the organizational goals.
  • Serves as a guide of the organization's business intelligence priorities to internal constituents through formal and informal communications.
  • Develops concise, insightful, and politically savvy communications; which are often in PowerPoint, but also in email and verbally via committee meetings, staff meetings, and working sessions.

Dashboard and scorecard development

  • Develops effective key performance indicators, management dashboards and balanced scorecards that provide enhanced insight and improve organizational decision-making.
  • Able to design dashboards with advanced Tableau functionality built with end user functionality in mind.
  • Perform system integration and deployment activities, prepare system support documentation, and document program and system functions.

Healthcare analytics

  • Provides healthcare analytics support (e.g., predictive analytics, statistical analysis, data and text mining, data validation, prescriptive analysis) to generate insights that can be transformed into action and include a broad set of tools, processes, technologies, and stakeholders for collecting, integrating, accessing, and analyzing information.

Project management

  • Provides effective project management to clearly define projects, develop project plans, and set priorities for working teams.


  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline. 
  • Two (2) years of experience in healthcare business intelligence and analytics.
This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Health Care System, in a department that provides shared services to operations across UNC Health Care. This is not a State employed position.
