Job Description

The UNC Hospitals Emergency Department (ED) is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center serving as North Carolina's primary referral hospital as well as also serving as the community hospital for Chapel Hill/ Orange County.  UNC Hospitals is also recognized as a verified Burn Center, Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center, and AHA Gold Level facility for the care of STEMI patients.

The Emergency Department at UNC Hospitals cares for patients ranging from minor illnesses and injuries to critical medical emergencies and trauma patients ranging in age neonates to the elderly.  This large number of high acuity patients received in our department contributes to a very challenging and rewarding clinical environment for nurses and other members of our multi-disciplinary healthcare team.

The 90-bed ED utilizes a pod design with a team staffing format.  All rooms have central monitoring capability.  The ED is organized in the following functional areas:

     - Acute Care (Team A & B)

     - Three Trauma Bays (adult/ pediatric trauma and resuscitation)

     - Acute beds equipped for cardiac and invasive monitoring

     - SANE exam room (for sexual assault exams)

     - Behavioral Health ED

     - Psychiatric/Crisis rooms

     - Pediatric ED

To become a member of our emergency nursing staff, you must have at least one year of nursing experience, this could include ED experience (preferred), or critical care/ intermediate care.  We will provide training to meet individual needs.  The staff orientation to the Emergency Department includes both 1:1 preceptor program and critical care classes.

Certification such as ACLS, PALS, and TNCC are standard expectations for emergency nurses at UNC Hospitals, and nurses must achieve these certifications within six to twelve months after employment.  Emergency care at UNC Hospitals offers emergency nurses opportunities not available at every hospital.  This includes community outreach programs such as injury prevention programs and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) team.

This position is 36 hours per week, rotating shifts, some weekends, flexible preferred scheduling to meet the needs of the RN and unit.  This position qualifies for an extensive benefit package including PTO hours accrued based on the number of hours hired.

Requires graduation from a state-accredited school of professional nursing and one (1) year of nursing experience. Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse and hold a current certification in Healthcare Provider or BLS Provider in BLS/CPR.  Strongly prefer candidates to have current certification in ACLS, PALS, and Trauma (TNCC).

If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled in an accredited program within four years of employment, and obtain a Bachelor's degree with a major in Nursing or a Master's degree with a major in Nursing within seven years of employment date.
