Description

RN Oncology Nurse Navigator Position for Surgical Oncology

This position is exempt, 40 hours/week. As a State employee, this position offers State benefits including health & retirement plans as well as PTO accruals. 


An experienced RN is needed to facilitate the treatment plan and help to navigate the oncology patient from diagnosis through treatment to survivorship or end of life.

  • An oncology nurse navigator (ONN) is a professional Registered Nurse with oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers.
  • Provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum.
  • In addition to facilitating timely complex coordination of appointments, diagnostic testing and procedures, the navigator is responsible for identifying potential and realized barriers to care and facilitating referrals as appropriate to migrate barriers and expedite the plan of care.
  • Assesses patients current health practices, identifies health problems, determines the degree of compliance and problems complying with the prescribed treatment plan, and documents this information in the patients chart.
  • Analyzes data from patient interviews, chart reviews, and physical assessments to determine patient's nursing care needs including direct care, referral to other departments.
  • Interacts with referring physicians for new and ongoing patient management.
  • Will work with the oncologist and various multidisciplinary healthcare teams to facilitate timely complex coordination or appointments, diagnostic testing, and procedures, referral both internal and externally.                        


Navigators must possess excellent verbal and written skills, strong organizational, prioritization skills, time management, strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Ability to work autonomous and collaboratively with healthcare teams. Basic working knowledge of managed care, insurance coverage, procedures, and community resources preferred, but can be learned. Prior Epic experience helpful but not required.

 

The Navigator reports to the Nurse Manager(s) responsible for the Oncology Nurse Navigation program.

Qualifications

Requires graduation from a state-accredited school of professional nursing; BSN or higher in Nursing required. Attainment of Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) within two years of employment. Must maintain ONC credentials throughout employment. 

 

Requires at least two years of nursing experience, including at least one year in the area of oncology specialization. Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
