Job Description


The Department of Anesthesiology Pain Management Center seeks a physician's assistant/nurse practitioner to see new and returning patients, with physician consultation as well as independently, at its current locations including Southern Village and Hillsborough HMOB. Duties include patient history and physical examination, assessments, evaluations, and formulations of comprehensive pain care plans.


Care plans include: medication management of non-opioid and opioid medications, recommendations for psychological consultation/evaluation, referral to physical therapy or outside consultants, ordering of urine drug screens, radiological studies, laboratory studies, and signing up patients for interventional pain injections. The physician's assistant/nurse practitioner may be trained to do minor procedures such a trigger point injections and joint injections. UNC Pain Management physicians will appropriately train selected applicant, who must feel comfortable prescribing controlled substances and checking the North Carolina Controlled Substances Database. The PA/NP must also be willing to do inpatient consults during regular clinic hours at UNC Hospitals.



Requires graduation from a Physician Assistant program approved by the NC Board of Medical Examiners and "approved to practice medical acts" based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners, and preferably one year of experience as an extender; or licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Board of Nursing, graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the NC Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and "approved to practice medical acts" based on education and experience by the Joint Subcommittee, and preferably one year of experience as an extender; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high quality, cost effective care to patients within the APPs scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. The APP reflects the mission, vision, and values of the organization, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and other regulatory and accreditation standards.


Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program. Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department.
