Job Description


Position: Quality & Organizational Excellence Specialist / Controlled Substance Assessment Program
Location: Main Hospital / Chapel Hill
Hours: Full Time, 40 hrs/wk; Days

The Controlled Substances Assessment Program is led by a team within the Department of Pharmacy with a focus on compliance and surveillance of appropriate management and storage of medications classified as controlled substances within the hospital.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Perform assigned internal pharmacy audits providing analyzed results in a timely manner for dashboard completion and leadership review, working collaboratively with team members by reporting out compiled and analyzed results.
  • Independently manage assigned reports and be able to gather data from multiple data sources for integration, confirming accuracy of data through validation and understanding of data through analysis.
  • Recognizing and communicate areas of concern regarding controlled substances management discovered during auditing process
  • Proactively use available resources to self-learn and become more proficient in the subject area and tools used to develop and perform internal audits with accompanying SOPs based on guidance from consultant review and/or results from internal gap analysis.
  • Interpret, share, and broadly influence clinical, and operational data important to compliance of controlled substances management across the Medical Center and UNC HCS.
  • Complete all work with deliverables provided to manager for review by predetermined agreed upon deadlines
  • Others duties as assigned
Systems utilized in this position will include, but are not limited to:
  • Microsoft Excel and Access
  • Automated dispensing data
  • SAP Business Object
  • Foundations System Inc. Pharmacy Management System
  • Wholesaler and group purchasing data
  • EPIC Health Records
Additionally, this position will interface closely with business analysts in the Pharmacy Analytics team for data warehousing needs related to controlled substances. They will be instrumental in providing quality and organizational excellence through support of process improvement initiatives. Utilize quality and process improvement tools, methodologies and technologies to review work flow and develop and perform audits to enhance operations.


Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline. 

If Associates Degree: Four (4) years of experience in quality team facilitation, project management, process improvement or quality data analysis.
This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Health Care System, in a department that provides shared services to operations across UNC Health Care. This is not a State employed position.
