Job Description



Responsible for the administration of radiation therapy treatments to patients in accordance with the written directive of the Radiation Oncologist. Work is performed under the general supervision of a radiation therapy supervisor and is evaluated by conformance to standards and procedures.


Essential Functions

• Treats patients with ionizing radiation in adherence to all regulatory guidelines. Treatments include routine and complex radiation therapy treatments such as 3D, IMRT, SBRT, SRS, TBI, and brachytherapy.

• Assists radiation oncologists, clinical physicists and others in the simulation of patients to prepare physical and technical aspects of radiation treatment plans, using information about patient condition and anatomy. Constructs patient immobilization devices.

• Monitors all equipment parameters, documents equipment malfunctions and understands all emergency and safety procedures of all equipment. Uses appropriate protective equipment and procedures to ensure safety of patients, self, and others.

• Maintains accurate medical records and treatment schedules.

• Recognizes and reports patient concerns and physical problems to appropriate personnel.

 • Documents treatments and other associated details in the radiation oncology EMR.

• Communicates instructions and procedures to patients and their families.

• Communicates instructions and procedures to patients and their families.

• Assists with the clinical instruction of radiation therapy students.



Graduation from a JRCERT accredited radiation therapy program or international equivalent.

Registered in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (T). Must be in good standing with all CE and license requirements.

CPR certification




Graduation from a Radiation Therapy Technologist program approved by the Council of Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA).

Radiation Therapy certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Or Board Eligible (must receive certification within one year of hire).

This is a State position employed by UNC Health Care System.
