Description

  • Responsible for all hospital-based inpatient (IP) coding and approximately 30 employees. 

  • Develop and oversees the implementation of coder performance and productivity. 
  • Identify process improvement opportunities for inpatient Coding to ensure quality outcomes, expected mortality, SOI and ROM, and DRG Management. 
  • Oversee the development, implementation, dissemination, and adherence to policy and procedures related to inpatient coding activities.  
  • Participate in organizational initiatives relative to coding technology to improve accuracy and compliance. 
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on accurate and appropriate coding and documentation standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements. 
  • Serve on local and/or system committees, councils, focus groups and work teams associated with advancing the revenue cycle strategy of the health care system upon request.
  • Make decisions that produce high quality results by applying knowledge, analyzing problems, and calculating risks. 
  • Understand the overall financial performance of the organization and applies financial concepts and practices to establish and maintain realistic budgets. 
  • Use financial information to monitor overall financial status of operations.

Qualifications

  • If Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline: ten (10) years direct experience AND five (5) years management experience in a formal leadership role (director, supervisor, manager/coordinator).
  • If Associate's degree in an appropriate discipline: twelve (12) years direct experience AND five (5) years management experience in a formal leadership role (director, supervisor, manager/coordinator).

Licensure / Certification:

  • If Associate's Degree in Health Information Management - National Certification as RHIT
  • If Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management - National Certification as RHIA
  • If Bachelor's Degree in Nursing -  one of the following: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H), Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS), OR Certified Clinical Documentation Integrity/Improvement Practitioner (CDIP)

This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Health Care System, in a department that provides shared services to operations across UNC Health Care. This is not a State employed position.
