The Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit is located on the 5th floor of the Heart and Vascular Hospital. The staff in CSICU, a 14 bed unit, provides care for critically ill patients requiring postoperative recovery of cardiothoracic, vascular surgery, ECMO and/or intensive care interventions. The essential duties and responsibilities of a Critical Care RN for the CISCU HV Department includes:
The Clinical Nurse IV practices at the level of an expert practitioner of nursing as defined by Benner, P. (1984). From Novice to Expert. Addison-Wesley Publishing Company. The nurse at this level demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with multiple and complex problems. In addition to demonstrating clinical leadership on the unit, the Clinical Nurse IV serves as a resource and system-wide consultant to staff and participates in endeavors to increase nursing knowledge. The CN IV functions as a clinical leader.
Essential Charge Nurse Duties and Responsibilities are as follows. Other duties may be assigned.
Maintains an environment of safety for patients, self and others.
Maintains staffing efficiency through adhering to staffing benchmarks.
Adjusts staffing/patient assignments in a timely manner.
Supports staff RN in the provision of patient care.
Maintains awareness of current patient population, the basic plans for unit specific patients, and any unusual needs or concerns.
Keeps the Clinical Manager informed of operational issues.
Communicates with Administrative Coordinators as needed.
Essential Administrative Duties and Responsibilities are as follows. Other duties may be assigned.
Supports corporate goals and unit specific initiatives. May act as champion for specific projects.
Consistently demonstrates alliance with and support for Clinical Manager. Supports the manager in preparation and delivery of staff meetings and unit huddles.
Provides clear, consistent communications regarding unit activities and initiatives.
Provides support and mentoring for the staff nurse and other coworkers.
Participates in interviewing and selection of new hires per manager direction. Consults with preceptors and educators to provide support and validation of new hires at orientation/onboarding.
Creates, manages, and maintains unit schedules; submits to Clinical Manager for final approval. Assists with timekeeping, if requested, to include monitoring and follow-up for time and attendance.
Assists with performance management through the development, documentation and delivery of performance reviews.
Holds coworkers accountable to unit expectations and assists in coaching and counseling per manager direction.
Participates in unit specific quality improvement projects. Leads unit specific quality improvement initiative (minimal one annually).
Participates in shared governance councils.
Assists with reporting, documentation, investigation and follow-up of variances.
Provides mediation and leadership to manage patient concerns.
Participates in the budget development process.
Completes and reviews audits via electronic medical record and other sources as directed.
Assists Clinical Manager with Carolina Care initiatives to include daily rounds.
Assists with regulatory reviews and surveys as needed.
Facilitates communication and patient planning meetings (CAPP) as appropriate.
COMMUNICATION: Uses appropriate methods to clearly convey information to others in an engaging way, which helps others understand and retain the message.
COLLABORATION: Works with others respectfully and openly; provides help to achieve shared goals.
SERVICE: Anticipates and meets or exceeds all patient/customer needs and pro-actively takes responsibility for ensuring their quality care experiences. All co-workers will be held to standards and behaviors guided by the UNCHCS Service Framework.
SAFETY: Meets or exceeds patient and co-worker safety requirements while promoting and achieving quality outcomes.
ACCOUNTABILITY: Takes ownership for goals and outcomes; effectively and efficiently uses available resources to successfully complete tasks.

Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from a state-accredited school of professional nursing. Eighteen (18) months of professional nursing experience in a tertiary care setting to include didactic and clinical experience in the area of assignment preferably with charge and precepting experience in the area of assignment.
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional certification relevant to the practice area and on the ANCC Magnet approved list within the probationary period of employment.
