Job Description


Collaborates with HR professionals, employees, and other stakeholders to address and resolve issues surrounding Family Medical Leave, short-term disability, and long-term disability.

Coordinates with the organization’s FMLA, STD and LTD Administrator. Provides administrator with co-worker information and additional documentation. Changes status in Lawson to place coworker on appropriate leave status and to reactivate them when they return.

Counsels co-workers in regards to Family Medical Leave and the FMLA application process. Coordinates with the FMLA Administrator and the department Manager through education and communication. Coordinates the Personal and Military leave of absence process. Verifies the status of the coworker to insure eligibility. Assists managers in troubleshooting issue with the leave Administrator.

Secures necessary documentation from the leave administrator when co-worker returns from leave with restrictions and involves the co-worker’s manager and the HR Business Partner as appropriate.

Assists the Employee Health Services physician and nurse practitioner in managing the caseload of all work place illness/injuries covered under workers compensation with the goal of ensuring that the injured coworker receives appropriate care and follow-up and successfully returns to work as quickly as possible.

Completes data entry into the Lawson system including the maintenance of days lost and restricted duty. Ensure forms are completed and filed with the workers compensation carrier in a timely manner. Coordinates workers compensation leave with FMLA administrator. Communicates timely with the coworker and Manager in regard to payroll and proper coding of the time record. Partners with the Benefits team if time out of work goes beyond 2 weeks.

At the direction of the Employee Health medical providers, assists in the scheduling of appointments for physical therapy, radiology, outside medical providers or return appointments with the EHS medical providers.

At the direction of the EHS Medical providers, assists in the placement of the injured coworker into alternative assignment while on restricted duty; communicates systematically with the injured coworker and the home Department leader.

Assists the EHS Manager in updating the status reports weekly. Participates in the weekly status report meeting with the EHS Manager and the EHS Nurse Practitioner.

Assists legal counsel in preparing for hearings and mediation as necessary.


High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Two (2) years of related HR experience required.

Prefer candidates with experience in a technical capacity involving the application of the North Carolina Workers' Compensation and OSHA and demonstrated knowledge of short term disability, long term disability, FMLA and other leave related laws.

This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Heath Care System. This is not a State employed position.
