Job Description




The purpose of this position is to deliver quality service by enhancing the patient experience and providing accurate nutrition guidance via phone for patients at UNC Medical Center, UNC Hillsborough, and UNC Chatham according to their prescribed medical nutrition therapy.  This includes precise adherence to strict nutrition guidelines, allergies, and diet restrictions.  This position requires use of a nutrition management database, verbal guidance of patient’s meal selections to meet medical nutrition therapy requirements, and translation of tube feed orders into production.  This position will also work as a liaison between the patient and the Clinical Nutrition team; recommending adequate Restaurant Delivery style menu selections for the corresponding nutrition therapy diets.  It is critical to the patient’s safety that the recommended diet limitations are monitored to the utmost precision.






Description of Duties:


  • Operates Cisco phone system to answer patient, patient guests’, and nursing phone calls while maintaining customer service quality assurance standards.

  • Assists in resolving reported issues in regards to the Nutrition and Food Services patient services department.  This encompasses, but is not limited to, the clarification of patient diet orders, the execution of patient priority trays, resolution of patient satisfaction concerns, and bulk nourishment requests.

  • Monitors patient’s prescribed nutrition therapy diet orders directed from EPIC via nutrition management database Computrition. Verifies that the accurate diet orders, allergies, and restrictions are transferred across the interface in regards to hospital patient safety standards. 

  • Responsible for identifying errors and resolving problems promptly as related to patient medical nutrition therapy

  • Provides guidance to patients with their Restaurant Delivery menu orders.  Monitors daily nutrient intakes for patients on specialized diets to ensure that daily nutrient allowances are not exceeded

  • Precisely enters patients eternal tube feed orders and ensures that the corresponding tube feed product is directed to the appropriate patient.  Accurately calculates daily tube feed consumption quantities established by provided goal rates

  • Operates POS register system.  Maintains security compliance standards when taking customer credit card payments via phone and upholds HIPAA Privacy standard regulations relative to confidential patient personal and medical information

  • Communicates with the Clinical Nutrition team and patient in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner to ensure patients receive proper nutrition care 

  •  Creates nourishment labels, production tallies, patient nutrient reports and monitor appropriate special services for patients needing inimitable care.

  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel and e-mail.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to work well with others - strong teamwork skills

  • Must be flexible and able to function in a work environment where work and schedules may change to meet the needs of the patient.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with customers and deliver excellent customer service

  • Ability to control and manage a phone call.

Various Shifts every other weekend

One Full-Time Position (40hrs)

One Part-Time Position (20hrs)



High School diploma or GED or the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos, and the ability to write simple correspondence. One (1) year of experience with food service or customer service experience OR hospital clinical dietetics.


If a Bachelor's degree, no experience is required.


If an Associate's degree, six (6) months of experience with food service or customer service experience OR hospital clinical dietetics.
