UNC Kittner Eye Center at Carolina Crossing is seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant. The COA will provide skilled technical support to our physicians. This position works under the general supervision of the Ophthalmologist and will perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including but not limited to central and peripheral visual field tests, fundus photography, ocular motility tests; color vision tests; pharmacological pupil tests; A-Scan and B-Scan, applanation tonometry and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation. The selected candidate must perform retinoscopy and manifest refraction using the phoropter and cross-cylinder. Measure acuity of patient, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision; obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems; record findings on patient chart. Work is performed under the general supervision of an Ophthalmologist. Experience with multi-specialty services is a plus. The COA will hold strong patient service skills and must be able to work in a collaborative environment for optimal patient care. JCAHPO Certification is required.
● High School diploma or GED
● National Certification by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology at the Assistant level.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● If graduation from an accredited CoA-OMP or CMA (Canadian Medical Association) training program: Six (6) months of clinical experience.
