Job Summary:

The IT Auditor reports to the Director of Audit Services as part of the Audit, Compliance, and Privacy Services Department. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians. We accomplish this by providing "Best in Class" leadership and excellence in areas of patient care, education, and research. 

The IT Auditor conducts analytical reviews and audits of data processing functions, designed to ensure the adequate control of assets and financial records. The IT Auditor is also responsible for executing analytical assignments and participation in the investigation, evaluation, and design of new or proposed computer projects.


  • Evaluate technology systems, platforms, and operational processes against leading practices, frameworks and risk considerations.
  • Conduct risk-based IT, operational, and compliance assurance and consulting engagements across the audit life-cycle: planning, risk assessment, coordination, fieldwork, data analysis, evaluation of design and control effectiveness, work paper documentation, reporting, and remediation validation with oversight from the Director and senior team members.
  • Document work papers in a consistent and high quality manner, while executing project tasks within established timelines.
  • Utilize project management and organization skills to prioritize tasks, balance workload, anticipate next steps, and adapt to change.
  • Tailor communications to audiences and persuasively articulate risk impacts to business and IT areas.
  • Compose concise, effective engagement reports with attention to detail.


  • Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Systems or related field (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
  • If a Bachelor's Degree: Two (2) years of experience in IT Audit/computer information systems.
  • If an Associate's Degree: Six (6) years of experience in IT Audit/computer information systems. 
  • If a High School Diploma or GED: Ten (10) years of experience in IT Audit/computer information systems.

Preferred (but not a must):

  • Working knowledge of IT General Control Frameworks, such as COBIT, NIST, ITIL, and/or ISO/IEC 27001
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of Audit Software Products, such as CaseWare IDEA and/or TeamMate Audit
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or other relevant industry recognized certification
  • Knowledge of the Institute of Internal Auditors International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF)
This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Health Care System, in a department that provides shared services to operations across UNC Health Care. This is not a State employed position.
