Medical Director, Virtual Services

Purpose:

The Medical Director of UNC Health’s Virtual Services is a dynamic, experienced physician leader who is passionate about transforming the future of healthcare. This position partners with Virtual Care leadership to develop a structure or framework to translate virtual tools and ideas into discrete Virtual Care services to support UNC Health goals and initiatives. The Medical Director, Virtual Services leads and collaborates with physician leaders within UNC to establish, grow, and expand robust telehealth services.

This individual drives the clinical vision and leads the Virtual Services clinical team to achieve excellent clinical performance, patient experience, and outcomes while also advancing clinical innovation and the overall program success strategy. As a key member of the UNC Health Virtual Care Team, the Medical Director will report to the Executive Medical Director of Virtual Care and dotted line to the Director of Virtual Services. The position will require a time commitment of 0.4 FTE (16 hours per week).

Key Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as an ambassador of Virtual Care within the organization and partners with clinical leaders to promote the creation and adoption of Virtual Services.
  • Introduces, updates, and champions clinical guidelines and standards of care within the medical provider team. Communicates with providers regarding new developments and initiatives.
  • Evaluates medical provider performance and provides regular feedback related to performance, clinical quality, compliance, and fiscal indicators. Assesses job satisfaction and well-being and offer resources and support as needed.
  • Ensures appropriate medical staffing levels and identifies recruitment needs with administrative partner.
  • Takes lead in provider recruitment and onboarding of providers with focus on identifying strong fit.
  • Routinely assesses telemedicine processes to improve access to care, sustain best practices in the care delivery process and improve patient outcomes.
  • Drives clinical model design, policy, program eligibility, and strategic plan. Leads clinical operations workgroup/oversight committee to coordinate operations, initiatives, and clinical priorities.
  • Assists in developing the strategy, use cases, and workflows for new clinical services.
  • Participates in medical reviews, safety event reports, and collaborates with the Executive Medical Director for resolution.
  • Attends, participates or leads meetings, as appropriate, with key stakeholder groups engaged in the support of Virtual Services.
  • Establishes an environment of teamwork and inter-professional collaboration to ensure an integrated team approach to patient care.
  • Performs all clinical and administrative duties expected of a medical provider.
  • Education: graduation from an accredited school of medicine. Board certified in specialty.
  • Licensure/Certification: North Carolina Medical License, DEA License, BCLS certification and ACLS certification. Board certified in area of specialty.
  • Must possess a strong knowledge of clinical processes and operations in a large health care system.
  • At least one year of experience with quality and performance improvement required.
  • Two or more years of management experience in healthcare related roles preferred.
  • Experience with telehealth and telemedicine programs and initiatives.
  • Direct involvement with clinical and integrated IT system planning, implementation, and support in a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of national trends, key technologies, clinical, and business trends for telehealth.
  • Ability to interact with and influence stakeholders at all levels in a transparent manner.
  • Excellent written, oral communication skills, facilitation skills, and the ability to prepare and deliver presentations.
  • Be highly motivated and possess intellectual curiosity, vision, and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to analyze and apply financial data and industry reports to guide strategy.
  • Self-starter, motivated by the challenge of navigating the ambiguity of a new role and services
  • Must have the ability to build trust and consensus, lead change, and activate support among diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Must be a strategic thinker and problem solver with a patient-centered attitude and strong customer service.

Qualifications:

  • Education: graduation from an accredited school of medicine. Board certified in specialty.
