Summary:

This position is responsible for the day to day functional management of professional coding and charge support for all assigned physician services within the Health Care System. This includes working closely with physicians and other care providers to ensure the services they are providing are documented and recorded accurately. This position will work closely with the director, Information Services staff, and customers to trouble shoot any impacts to charge capture or delays in submission. The manager will also work closely with compliance to ensure adherence to UNC Health System coding and billing policies and procedures. Responsibilities include revenue generation, operational analysis, financial analysis, problem resolution, personnel management and performance improvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Financial Services - Responsible for managing all professional coding and charge support for physician services. Responsible for planning, developing, and implementing new systematic approaches to optimizing coding work flows to improve staff efficiency. Responsible for identifying trends and optimization opportunities that will enhance staff productivity. Establishes and monitors coding performance goals and metrics for the organization. Plans, directs and supervises coding staff to insure timely, accurate and complete processing of charges. Responsible for supporting value-based reimbursement through HCC coding or other mechanisms to enhance the information that will impact revenue/risk. Provides direction and leadership to subordinate staff. Works closely with the insurance accounts receivable managers to minimize denials.

Understands the overall financial performance of the organization and applies financial concepts and practices to establish and maintain realistic budgets. Uses financial information to monitor overall financial status of operations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline.
  • CPC or CCS (or equivalent coding certification).
  • Five (5) years of progressive experience in a related field.
  • If Associate's degree, Seven (7) years of progressive experience in a related field.
  • Understands and appropriately applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.

This position is employed by NC Health (Rex Healthcare, Inc., d/b/a NC Health), a private, fully-owned subsidiary of UNC Health Care System, in a department that provides shared services to operations across UNC Health Care. This is not a State employed position.
