Job Summary: 

Physician Assistants (PAs) in Otolaryngology manage a broad range of medical and surgical conditions and are usually involved in all aspects of patient care, both in outpatient and inpatient settings. The PA will provide care to general ENT pediatric and adult patients. Primarily working in clinic with opportunity to assist with surgeries in the operating room. For purposes of the OMH Medical Staff By-laws, Physician Assistants are considered dependent-practice allied health professionals and are credentialed through medical staff processes.


  • Independently perform minor procedures, either in the office or emergency room, such as cerumen removal, removing sutures, drainage of peritonsillar abscess, I&D skin abscess of head, face or neck, control of epistaxis with cautery/nasal packing, etc.
  • Evaluations include Hearing loss, childhood and chronic ear infections, tinnitus, vertigo, chronic rhinosinusitis, chronic nosebleeds, difficulty breathing through nose, allergies, voice concerns, difficulty swallowing, enlarged tonsils, chronic tonsil infections, sleep apnea, lumps and bumps in neck, salivary gland disease, thyroid disease, and head and neck cancer.
  • Appropriate and timely documentation of clinical care.
  • Code and bill accurately per established protocol and procedure.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate education to increase the knowledge of patient, patient family, and others.
  • Train other staff in areas of clinical expertise.
  • Assist in operating room with neck surgeries
  • Considers health care access, fiscal responsibility, efficacy, and quality when providing care
  • Advocates for a culture of safety for patients and patients’ rights
  • Maintains confidential medical records
Specialized Knowledge/Skills:
  • Perform patient assessment to obtain a complete and accurate record of the patient’s clinical information and medical symptoms.
  • Order tests and exams to obtain additional information needed to ensure proper and complete care of patient
  • Based on assessment, diagnose patient needs and determine a plan of care. Interpret patient care tests and exams to obtain needed information to guide care.
  • Provide for the treatment of the patient (and oversee the treatment provided by others) including appropriate prescriptive practice to achieve optimal outcomes for the patient.
  • Utilize advanced specialty knowledge to ensure that the care provided is appropriate, effective, timely, and cost efficient.
  • Perform diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures as defined by Scope of Practice.
  • Selects, analyzes, and interprets relevant data to develop a plan of care that meets individual patient needs, is age specific, and reflects professionally recognized standards of care.

  • Ability to multi-task and work as part of a patient care team
  • Knowledgeable of medical terminology and other medical records maintenance procedures
  • Possess strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate with patients, physicians, management, center staff and community agencies
  • Demonstrate sound judgement and composure with the ability to take appropriate actions in questionable or emergency situations
  • Computer literate in Electronic Medical Records
  • Skilled in development and maintenance of quality assurance practices.
  • Stay abreast of current trends in healthcare practice and participate in continuing medical education to ensure optimal clinical knowledge and effective patient care.
  • May participate in research and utilizes evidence-based practice to promote quality patient care, protocol development, care process model development, and best practice standards for assigned patient population.


  • Education: Graduate of an AMA accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience preferred in ENT
  • Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations:
    • Current unrestricted license to practice as PA in North Carolina
    • Maintains national certification
    • Maintains American Heart Association BLS certification
    • Credentialed privileges per medical staff
    • Designated supervising physician per NCBOM
