The Department of Pastoral Care at the UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC is currently looking for a dedicated, passionate, and highly caring clinical chaplain to join the chaplaincy team. The department has robust ACPE CPE and clinical chaplaincy programs. The clinical chaplain will provide the highest quality of pastoral care and aftercare to patients, family members and the staff in the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center and the outpatient burn center clinic.

 This position will be dedicated to providing pastoral care to the patients, family members and staff in the surgery/trauma service line specifically with burn patients. The position will include direct patient care and working as an aftercare team member to provide aftercare programming for patients. The ministry includes: providing one-on-one pastoral care in the in-patient and out-patient settings, with a focus on patients, family members and staff, leading caregiver groups, planning retreats, reunions, and other aftercare programs, participating in team and unit based rounds, participate in service line, department, and hospital wide committees, provide documentation for patient encounters, provide 24 hour back-up coverage in rotation with other pastoral care staff members, lead worship service in the hospital chapel as needed and requested throughout the year, teach didactics within the Department of Pastoral Care and in the hospital community as needed, serve as a mentor to a CPE resident, complete administrative tasks, and other assigned task may be given according to the spiritual needs of the institution.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Consultation:

Serves as a resource or consultation for staff, CPE residents and interns about patient (client) problems, and assists in utilizing institutional and/or community resources in meeting patient (client), family, and staff needs. Collaborates with other departments or agencies serving the specific needs of the client population. Works with the Aftercare team members to provide collaborative care for inpatient and outpatients, sharing in the duties of direct care and event planning and coordination, implementation and after action reviews. Identifies and collaborates with multidisciplinary team regarding patient needs during clinic visit which may include school re-entry age appropriate programming and individualized interventions designed to enhance the patients’ abilities to function in life activities post discharge.

 Departmental and Institutional: 

Attends meetings as assigned such as Ethics Committee, CQI, Palliative Care, CISM, and diversity education. Participated in appropriate professional organizations. Participates in aftercare outreach activities. Develops and designs promotional materials for aftercare services. Actively markets programs and encourages participation. Makes presentations and provides education related to aftercare intervention/programs. Participates in improvement activities. Participates in the design and implementation of research projects and publishes articles relative to aftercare. 

Ensures that Care is provided: 

Ensures that care is provided and other activities are documented appropriately in on-call book, EPIC, departmental stats, and other required documents. Provides data entry and management of aftercare program functions for reporting purposes. Utilizes data for reporting purposes. Manages internal and external communication for program planning. Coordinates program activities with members of the aftercare team, burn center staff, legal office, public affairs, media, vendors, venue staff and other community partners such as the fire service and beyond. 

Manages Pastoral Care Provided:

Manages pastoral care provided by self and CPE interns/residents in defined clinical area or a larger patient (client) group with complex problems Coordinates pastoral care rotations, coordinates volunteer activities. Facilitates supervision and management for delivery of routines, schedules and procedures for aftercare programming. Designs and manages programming within an approved budget, coordinates facility planning, contractual agreements, and resources assistance for aftercare activities. Oversees the aftercare operations and program staff. Develops and maintains policy and procedure manual for aftercare planning. 

Program Development: 

Develops pastoral care programs, educational and or outreach programs for specific patient (client) populations, large clinical area, and or agency Plans, creates and conductus individualize and generalized aftercare programs for survivors and their families, taking into account specific patient needs and interests resources needs and appropriate health, safety, infection control and risk management procedures to assure therapeutic/rehabilitative benefit. Provides diversional and non-pharmacological pain management, procedural preparation, coping strategies for patients in the outpatient clinic. Plans, creates, and conducts individualized and generalized aftercare programs/therapeutic interventions for survivors and their families, taking into account the specific patient needs and interests, resources needed and appropriate health, safety, infection control and risk management procedures to assure therapeutic/rehabilitative benefit. Provide diversion and non-pharmacological pain management, procedural preparation, coping strategies, for patients in the outpatient clinic. 

Provides Pastoral Care: Provides pastoral care to patients (clients) families, and staff in specified clinical area in accordance with the professional code of ethics. Provides religious rites and rituals and memorial services as appropriate to the patient population. Under the joint supervision of the Director of Pastoral Care and the Director of Aftercare, provides comprehensive support services to burn service patients who have a wide variety of physical, spiritual, and psychological cognitive cultural and treatment needs. Maintains appropriate education.

Education Requirements:
● Master's degree in Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent degree from an accredited seminary or university.
● Graduation from accredited college and seminary with four (4) units of ACPE CPE, faith group endorsement.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Board eligible by the Association of Professional Chaplains. Certification must be obtained within two years of hire.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Prior pastoral experience in hospital setting and/or congregation.
