Job Summary: 

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is a registered professional nurse who has national certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and is licensed as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Joint Board of Nursing and Medicare.  The NNP, in collaboration with the Neonatologist, perform patient management activities for an assigned group of neonates within established protocols.  In addition, indirect patient care responsibilities include role modeling, clinical consultation, and educator.

Specialized Knowledge/Skills:
  • Must be able to fully communicate (both orally and written) with parents of patients, physicians, employees, and members of the community either in person or via telephone.   Work effectively with others demonstrating tact, discretion, and diplomacy.  Must be able to maintain calm, effective, and logical performance in stressful situations. 


  • Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and completed an accredited certificate or Masters of Science in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Program
  • Experience: 3 - 5 years of NICU/ Neonatal Nurse Practitioner experience
  • Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations:
    • Certified as a NP by the ANCC or the AANP
    • Maintains American Heart Association BLS certification
    • ACLS and PALS certification required within 6 months of employment.
