Police Officer-K-9 Handler
Day shift (HOURS ARE ROTATING NOT SPECIFIC)

A. All handlers shall be sworn law enforcement officers
B. Handlers must have a mature, patient, decisive, self-controlled, good-natured, and disciplined personality.
C. Handlers must reside in a single family home, which provides a suitable environment with ample space, and yard to accommodate the dog and its kennel. The Support Services Commander or designee will conduct a home visit to the handler applicant as part of the application process to ensure proper space and yard requirements are met.
D. Canine handlers must be in good physical condition, a non-smoker, not suffer from serious medical problems and must be strong enough to withstand the dog handling, training and work conditions.
E. Any officer selected for the position of canine handler is expected to remain in the canine unit for the working life of the dog or 5 years, whichever comes first.
F. The officer shall have their family in agreement with his/her being assigned to the canine unit.
G. If there are other pets in the home, the officer shall agree that if conflict occurs between the department's animal and the pet, that the pet must be removed from the home.
Training and Certification:
The canine will receive a minimum of eight (8) hours of training per month under the supervision of a certified and approved K9 trainer at their training facility. All UNCHPD K9 units will strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of the K9 training unit while training under their direction. The canine and handler will also attend, at a minimum, quarterly training under the supervision of a certified and approved trainer. The canine handler will also be required to perform daily training with the agreement that a daily minimum compensation of 30 minutes per day will be allowed for at home care of the canine. The K9 handler will complete also complete certification/re-certification with a nationally accredited body annually.
● High School diploma or GED
● Successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training or the equivalent
● OC Spray (Pepper Spray) certification, TASER certification, and CIT certification within the first nine (9) months of hire (the Probationary Period). Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification. Must qualify with a passing score with issued duty weapon on the department's qualification course of fire within the first nine (9) months of hire (the Probationary Period).
● Must be at least 20 years old and be a US Citizen.
● Valid NC Driver's license
Professional Experience Requirements:
● No prior experience required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Must have the ability to work a shift of duty from 550 am to 550 pm or 550 pm to 550 AM, Shifts may be changed to conform to the needs of the department. Must be able to write a computer generated report, using a computerized form, based on a short fact scenario, which will be provided. A Passing score is 70%, objective scoring based on content, grammar, spelling, etc.
