Department of Complex Family Planning, University of North Carolina

Division Director

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation's first public university, is a global higher education leader known for innovative teaching, research and public service. The UNC School of Medicine, partnered with UNC Health Care, is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the US. As an institution, we strive to promote a diverse, inclusive environment where our colleagues excel in the interrelated areas of patient care, education, and research.

Chapel Hill is a vibrant college community that borders the Research Triangle Park, known globally for innovation in research & technology, along with Durham and Raleigh. With its famed collegiate rivalries, beautiful green spaces, and thriving economies, our region is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live, work, play, and learn.

The University of North Carolina Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a fellowship-trained academic subspecialist to lead its Division of Complex Family Planning in new and exciting directions. This position will replace the recently retired and founding Division Director.

One of 10 divisions in the UNC OB-GYN department, the Complex Family Planning Division was established in 2013. It is comprised of four faculty and two fellows who provide complex family planning services at UNC Hospitals and the local Planned Parenthood affiliate. The UNC Fellowship in Complex Family Planning has been in existence, with continuously matched fellows, since 2009, and achieved accreditation by the ACGME in February 2021. A Ryan Resident Training Program has been in place since 2008, with abortion and contraception training preceding that for many years.

Current members of the CFP Division include funded educators in the UNC School of Medicine, highly funded researchers, and the OB-GYN Residency Program Director, who collaborate with research and clinical colleagues from across the 14 schools of UNC Chapel Hill. The UNC Division of Complex Family Planning has achievable opportunities to expand its clinical expertise and reach, with ever-increasing practice locations across the UNC Health System and the State of North Carolina.

This is a faculty position at the Associate Professor or Professor rank, and will be tenure track, tenured, or fixed-term, dependent on the candidate’s qualifications. We are seeking a highly motivated, dynamic individual who has a national reputation, experience working in and leading change, with strong interpersonal and family planning advocacy skills. The successful applicant will have a track record of outstanding administrative and leadership skills and will be dedicated to the tripartite mission of excellence in clinical care, education, and research.

The Division Director’s role includes financial oversight and strategic planning for the clinical enterprise. They will have expertise and be clinically active in the ambulatory and surgical care of complex patients with reproductive health needs, focused on specialized contraceptive care, miscarriage management, and abortion. They will also lead the way in expanding the Division’s clinical footprint, potentially by providing obstetric/Labor & Delivery Care, as well as increasing the number of outpatient gynecology procedures and practice locations where they are provided. The Division Director will also work to support and enhance the vital research and educational missions of the division and to oversee the professional development of its team members.

The UNC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is one of the top programs in the country, with more than 100 faculty in 10 different divisions and more than 50 residents and fellows. The department is known for its innovative clinical care, robust research portfolio (ranked #3 in NIH funding), and outstanding training programs (a #3 Doximity-ranked residency program and 8 fellowships).

Education Requirements:

An MD degree with completion of a 4-yearACGMEaccredited OB-GYNresidency and a 2-year fellowship in Family Planning (now called Complex Family Planning).

Qualifications and Experience:

Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Board Certified/Board Eligible in Complex Family Planning. Candidates should also have:

  • Interest in and experience with navigating abortion policies and building coalitions to support abortion and contraception care.
  • A research/scholarly/academic area of focus.
  • Dedication to teaching.
  • Prior leadership experience (as a fellowship or clerkship director, medical director, administrative hospital position, or leadership roles in national or international organizations).
